America Ferrera has earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Barbie. Best known for her breakthrough role as Betty Suarez on ABC’s hit comedy, Ugly Betty, Ferrera is already an Emmy winner.
But there’s something that she’s not happy about. The actress is discontent with one decision the Oscars made this year. It’s for snubbing both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig despite their work setting a benchmark in Hollywood.
America Ferrera Couldn’t Hold Back After the Oscars Snub Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie
Tuesday morning, America Ferrera found herself catching the Oscar nomination news on her phone from her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars—Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel.
It was when she was snuggling in bed alone. Meanwhile, her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, took charge of the school run with their kids. “There was a moment where I wasn’t sure if I had made it up,” Ferrera told Variety. “And then my phone started blowing up so I figured that I must have heard it right.”
Obviously, it’s a dream come true for Ryan Gosling’s co-star, but she had a bittersweet morning. The 39-year-old actress told the same outlet:
“I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated. Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. […] What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look.”
Being the highest-grossing movie of 2023, Barbie earned eight Oscar nominations, with nods for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling.
Margot Robbie, however, missed out on a Best Actress nomination, and Greta Gerwig, who received a nod for writing the film, was notably absent from the Best Director category.

In a statement, Ryan Gosling said he was “extremely honored” to have been nominated for the Best Actor award. But the 41-year-old actor wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as the Oscars decided to skip Gerwig and Robbie. The Canadian actor told The Hollywood Reporter:
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
Gosling stood firm, arguing that Gerwig and Robbie’s efforts deserved a spot in the nominee lineup. He wrapped it up by congratulating Ferrera and the others who contributed to the incredible movie.
