Unexpectedly, Robbie revealed that Gal Gadot was once considered for the lead role of Barbie.

Director Greta Gerwig and the 32-year-old had expected Gadot as the perfect fit for the iconic toy character before ultimately casting Robbie in the role.

Robbie, who is not only the lead actress but also a producer of the film, explained in a recent interview with Vogue that they were searching for someone who exuded Barbie’s energy, and the Wonder Woman star perfectly embodied that essence. She explained,

“Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork”.

Although Gadot couldn’t commit to the role due to various circumstances, Robbie stepped in as the lead, taking the reins of the beloved doll character.

Before the 38-year-old was considered, Amy Schumer was originally announced as the lead for the live-action Barbie movie in 2016. However, scheduling conflicts led to her departure from the project, paving the way for Robbie’s successful portrayal.

While the upcoming Barbie movie promises to captivate audiences with its star-studded cast and dynamic storytelling, Robbie also highlights that the iconic doll’s charm shouldn’t be sexy.

Margot Robbie Addresses Iconic Character Barbie’s S*xualization

The executive producer of the Gerwig-directed Barbie film is shedding light on the issue of Barbie’s s*xualization. In a recent interview with Vogue, she opened up about her views on the controversy surrounding the iconic doll.

Expressing her perspective on the matter, Robbie highlights that Barbie is a plastic doll without organs, she said,

“She’s a doll. She’s a plastic doll. She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have organs, she doesn’t have reproductive organs. If she doesn’t have reproductive organs, would she even feel s*xual desire? No, I don’t think she could.”

Further, the Terminal performer shared,

“She is s*xualized. But she should never be s*xy. People can project sex onto her. Yes, she can wear a short skirt, but because it’s fun and pink. Not because she wanted you to see her butt.”

She also shared her initial reaction to the Barbie script, expressing her excitement about its quality but also harboring doubts that such a bold and progressive approach would be approved by the studio.

Joining Robbie in the film are renowned actors such as Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with an impressive ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and many others.

The diverse lineup promises a captivating portrayal of the Barbie universe, filled with depth and complexity.

Barbie is set to hit the theaters on July 21, 2023.
