Julia Roberts might be an award-winning actress but would she ever bag a trophy for being a great kisser? Well, if you ask Hugh Grant then he’d most likely disagree.
The Bridget Jones’s Diary star collaborated with Roberts, 55, on the 1999 romance comedy film helmed by Roger Michell titled Notting Hill, which ended up becoming one of the highest-grossing British films of all time. But while the movie ended up becoming a booming success and the duo’s chemistry on the screen was received wholeheartedly by the audience, their rapport behind the scenes hadn’t been the best.
In fact, Grant had passed some rather unsavory comments about the reality of kissing the much coveted Roberts, and it is far from romantic.
Hugh Grant Didn’t Enjoy Kissing Julia Roberts in Notting Hill
William Thacker and Anna Scott are one of the most adored power couples in the rom-com world, with the whole world swooning over their relationship. But surprisingly enough, the stars who portrayed the famous Notting Hill duo had quite a rocky equation off the screen.
Hugh Grant, who played the charming character of William in the film, in reality, didn’t exactly get along with the Pretty Woman actress. And Julia Roberts reciprocated the feeling of discomfort too, especially after the former had made one too many jokes about her kissing skills, or lack thereof.
In a 2015 episode of Watch What Happens Live, when the Love Actually star was asked if he was still in contact with his co-star, he admitted that he’d probably made “too many jokes about the size of her mouth” for her to still want to be in touch.
“I’ve probably made too many jokes about the size of her mouth. She might hate me by now.”
But how did it even get there? Well, Grant wasn’t lying when he said he’d made “too many jokes” about Roberts’ mouth.

This whole thing goes back to 2004 when the English actor made blatant jokes about just how big Roberts’ mouth had been on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show (via Digital Spy), concluding that to be one of the main reasons why kissing her hadn’t been the most joyous of moments. Sources also claimed that Grant had made similar comments on the set of Notting Hill as well, thereby putting up more barriers of awkwardness between Roberts and him.
“Very big-mouthed! Literally, physically, she has a very big mouth. When I was kissing her I was aware of a faint echo.”
When Oprah Winfrey offered that the Ticket to Paradise star was “one of the nicest people” she’d met, Grant said he “wouldn’t go that far.”
Despite their off-balance equation though, the Eat, Pray, Love star has apparently moved past Grant being “cruel” about her physical features and even claimed that it’d be “fun” to work with him again. “He’s forgiven now,” Roberts said in 2005, according to Female First.
