Top Gun: Maverick is the most popular film of 2022 which earned $1.4 billion at the Box Office when the movie industry was recovering from the pandemic. The sequel had a feel-good touch to it, with very little use of CGI and having Tom Cruise in the spotlight, the perfect recipe for a smash hit movie.

Monica Barbaro was The Best Candidate in Tom Cruise’s Flight School

Tom Cruise and Monica Barbaro were guests on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the actor gave a shallow glimpse of what to expect in the sequel set 34 years after the first film. Cruise explained how he spent a long time designing the training program for the actors so that they do not get sick while flying the fighter jets.

“I spent a long time trying to figure out, how to prep these guys for it because when you see the film, it’s all practical action.”

The Risky Business actor praised Monica Barbaro because she was “impressive” during the flight training. The cast members had to understand different aspects of cinematography and everything had to be “spot on” because they had little to no time for the film.

“She’s in an F-18, it’s very intense, and her training she never got sick in the airplane, she’s impressive. Um, and so I had to figure because they-they actually have to go up and I had to teach the actors about how to become pilots and the fighter pilots that were flying them to understand cinematography and editing.”

“And I also took them through editing and the lighting so that when you’re up there you knew how to start the cameras, turn them off and performance. There’s very specific things, this kind of performance because we didn’t have that much time with these aircrafts because we were feathered into their training program, so they absolutely had to be spot on.”

Thanks to the efforts of the multitalented actors, the cast members of the sequels look like real trained combat pilots. And when the audience saw the aerial combat during the training scene between Maverick and the Top Gun pilots, they were blown away.

The Top Gun: Maverick Cast Was Overprepared by Tom Cruise

The Chicago Justice actress explained that due to the training program designed by the actor, the cast was “overprepared in the best way.” As a result, the cast members paid attention to all the details and they learned how to recover if they passed out while flying the fighter jets.

Monica Barbaro

“I think, you designed such an extensive program, so you know, by the time it came to like filming the thing. We were so comfortable in these planes we actually had to up the intensity on our faces because you had overprepared us in-in the-the best way.”

“Because then that was when all of like, you know, then we had to do our own props, and fix our own makeup and make sure, you know we were rolling cameras and taking time codes and checking sound, and you know so we had to have all of that flight stuff pulling g’s and not getting nauseous or if you get nauseous learning how recover all of that just like down by the time we were filming.”

Due to the training program, that the cast members underwent during the filming, the cinephiles were blessed with some jaw-dropping scenes. Needless to say, the viewers knew they were in for a treat when they saw Darkstar, take off in the first scene of the movie.
