Last November, Melissa Barrera was let go of the upcoming 7th installment in the Scream franchise after Spyglass, the studio behind the IP, interpreted her Instagram posts about Palestine as anti-Semitic. But it wasn’t Barrera alone who won’t be returning for Scream 7, as not long after her firing, Jenna Ortega too parted ways with the IP
Although reports emerged claiming Ortega was already on her way out prior to Barrera’s firing, many speculated it might’ve been the Wednesday Star’s support for her costar that pushed her to quit. Almost 2 months after the incident, Barrera has finally shed light on the matter, expressing her laudation for the Wednesday Star.
Jenna Ortega Always Has Her Back Said Melissa Barrera
While speaking with Rolling Stone, Melissa Barrera touched on Jenna Ortega‘s exit from Scream 7, which led many to believe there was some sisterhood solidarity going on between the two. Although she didn’t outright say if the speculations were true or not, Barrera stressed that the Netflix Star is a very good person and always had her back, implying the truth might not be far from the speculation.
“Listen, Jenna is a good egg. She’s a good person and we love each other. She would show up for me and I would show up for her no matter what.”
More prominently, Barrera didn’t let the sudden firing shake her up in any major way, as within no time, she was up with her new acclaimed horror, Your Monster.
Melissa Barrera Clarifies Her Stance That Got Her Fired
Having played Sam Carpenter in Scream 5 and 6, with the latter setting a box-office record with the franchise’s highest domestic numbers, the news of her exclusion was a shock to both fans and the actor. Melissa Barrera clarified her statements, saying she only stood for humanity, further stressing that standing up for human rights and the freedom of people shouldn’t be controversial. Doubling down on her pro-Palestine Stance, the actor explained she was only asking for a ceasefire in Gaza, stating she didn’t even know what to say while responding to accusations of being anti-Semitic.
“It was shocking. I don’t even know what to say. I think everything that happened was very transparent, on both sides, and I know who I am, and I know that what I said always came from a place of love and a place of humanity and a place of human rights and a place of freedom for people, which shouldn’t be controversial. It shouldn’t be up for debate. So, I’m very at peace. The people who know me in my family know the truth about me and where I stand, and I think most people in the world also do.”
On one hand, Barrera’s career is up and running. Her next horror entry Abigail, is slated for April. However, things are less than ideal for Spyglass, as they have now lost two of their biggest stars.
