It’s been nearly five years since the release of Tim Miller’s Terminator: Dark Fate, where Linda Hamilton last reprised her role as Sarah Connor. Therefore, in an attempt to keep the franchise alive, James Cameron recently informed audiences that he’s working on a reboot, in May 2023. However, despite ongoing preparation, Hamilton seems to have lost her interest in returning to the franchise.
Speaking with Business Insider, Linda Hamilton revealed how she once previously tried bidding adieu to the franchise with 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. But after she returned with 2019’s Dark Fate, the actress recently confirmed that she wouldn’t star in any further Terminator reboots.
Linda Hamilton Won’t Return as Sarah Connor
Initially appearing as Sarah Connor in James Cameron‘s 1984 cult classic The Terminator, Linda Hamilton thereafter appeared in two other sequels of the franchise. Playing the role of Connor, the mother of a rebel leader in the future where machines take over the human race, Hamilton’s character is under constant threat of being assassinated by a killer robot that is sent back in time.
Despite appearing as an integral part of the storyline, Linda Hamilton seemingly lost her interest in the role, long back, after appearing in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Although she bid goodbye to her character in the film, Hamilton was again brought back to the franchise with Tim Miller’s Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019. But after Dark Fate, the actress pledged to bid adieu to Sarah Connor.
Although James Cameron revealed working on another Terminator reboot in May 2023, at the Dell Tech World conference, via GamesRadar, Linda Hamilton recently told Business Insider about losing interest in her character. No longer willing to battle against another killing machine, Hamilton discussed her decision to retire from the franchise.
Linda Hamilton Destroyed Sarah Connor’s Legacy
According to Linda Hamilton’s conversation with Business Insider, the actress revealed that she’s “done” with the Terminator franchise. Admitting that her character has been established in the sequels, and the story about Sarah Conner has been told, the actress implied that she is no longer interested in milking the plot.
“I’m done. I’m done. I have nothing more to say. The story’s been told, and it’s been done to death. Why anybody would relaunch it is a mystery to me. But I know our Hollywood world is built on relaunches right now.”
After stating her decision to retire as Sarah Conner, Linda Hamilton seemingly struggled to accept the praise that fans have showered on her character over the years. Pointing out that Connor makes some bad decisions, the actress made some comments about her own character that nearly destroyed Connor’s legacy.
“I truly feel like and felt like, Sarah Connor is not an icon. She’s a woman in hell. She makes some really bad choices. She’s not a good mother, she’s a good fighter! So you sort of try to parse the details out and go ‘Well, they respect her strength and her power, and I did create a warrior, but she’s very imperfect. She’s an imperfect person.’”
While Linda Hamilton’s decision to retire from the Terminator franchise came as a sudden blow for fans, her remarks on Sarah Conner seemed even more difficult to take. The actress almost blew her character’s legacy to smithereens before saying “Hasta la vista, baby” to the franchise.
The Terminator movies are available on Prime Video.
