Few celebrities can claim to excel in multiple files the way Jennifer Lopez has. A popular singer, a brilliant dancer, and a commercially successful actor, Lopez has proved that she is literally a jack of all trades. In addition, the Jenny From The Block crooner is one of the most electric performers who has set various stages on fire.
But not everyone is equally convinced about the Puerto Rican artist’s talent. A former Marvel alum and The Bear star Ayo Edebiri who has been a prominent presence in the 2024 Hollywood awards season, claimed that Lopez’s singing career was bogus, and stated that she never actually sang her own songs. This accusation resurfaced around the time that Edebiri and Lopez were due to appear together on Saturday Night Live.
Why Did Ayo Edebiri Find Jennifer Lopez’s Music Career Problematic?
There’s no denying the fact that Jennifer Lopez has been there and done it all in her multifaceted career. From gaining superstardom through music and films, the stunning performer has proved that she has the bandwidth to sustain herself in both industries. But Lopez’s name was part of a controversy in 2020 involving Ayo Edebiri who made some shocking observations about the singer’s music career.
Appearing in the Scam Goddess podcast four years ago, The Bear actor who also featured in Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse, was asked to comment by host Laci Mosley about Lopez’s Super Bowl performance that year. In the course of the conversation, Edebiri claimed that the I’m Real singer’s entire career was ‘one long scam’. She elaborated further by revealing the fact that the Maid in Manhattan star used ghost singers for her songs.
“I think she thinks that she’s still good even though she’s not singing for most of these songs,”
Edebiri’s comment which resurfaced in 2024, was significant because she and Lopez were scheduled to share space on Saturday Night Live. The Enough actor though, did not feature in the Emmy winner’s sketches and appeared only as a musical guest. Both stars seemed to share a friendly rapport, with Lopez not having reacted to Edebiri’s comment to date.
Jennifer Lopez On How her Musical Film Took Shape
Criticism about her music and singing talent is not pulling Jennifer Lopez down by any means. The star is currently ruling the roost with her Amazon Prime film, This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, in which she has brought her romantic life a full circle.
Having released her 3rd studio album This Is Me…Then during her initial years of courtship with Ben Affleck, The Mother actor has created this musical and visual treat 22 years later to pay tribute to the presence and influence of love in her life.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the On the Floor singer elaborated on the reasons behind wanting to represent this album cinematically, and how this perfectly depicted the various ups and downs in her life over the years.
“I was very inspired to make the music at this point in my life with all of the amazing things that have happened to me in the past couple of years and once the music was done, I thought, OK, this is very special. I want to do something special. I don’t want to just take the normal route and so, I created this cinematic experience.”
Lopez added that she was in the best place in her life mentally and emotionally, and believed that this was instrumental in her wanting to share these moments of growth and happiness with her fans.
