“She’s on top of the world”: Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Addresses Michelle Yeoh Joining MCU After Winning Oscar for $100M Everything Everywhere All at Once

In a recent interview talking about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and his excitement to reprise his role, actor Simu Liu joked about how Marvel Studios might not be able to afford Michelle Yeoh anymore after her Oscar win.

After an immensely successful career spanning decades, Michelle Yeoh won the Academy Award for best actress for her spectacular performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. As a result, mentioning his admiration and pride for his co-star, Liu joked that he thinks Yeoh is pretty much the queen of everything, and as such, quite difficult to get hold of even for Marvel.

Simu Liu talks about Michelle Yeoh

In a recent interview with Collider, Simu Liu showed his appreciation for his Shang-Chi and the Legen of the Ten Rings co-star Michelle Yeoh with good humor. Saying how excited he is to reprise his role as Shaun, with his co-stars in the movie, he added,

That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”

Liu and Yeoh have always had an amazing relationship, and it seems with Yeoh’s recent Oscar win Liu’s respect for his industry senior has grown ten-fold.

Michelle Yeoh‘s 2022 movie Everything Everywhere All at Once finally managed to bestow the Best Actress award crown on Yeoh’s head after taking the world through a storm. The movie also dethroned The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as the most-awarded movie ever at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony this year. As a result, Liu’s good-natured poke at his aunt Ying Nan in Shang-Chi is not exactly a surprise.

Simu Liu’s excitement about his role in Shang-Chi

Simu Liu in the interview repeatedly mentioned just how eager he is to come back as Shang-Chi once again. With this fairly new Marvel superhero coming to show his prowess once again with Shang-Chi 2, it would be safe to say that fans will not have to wait very long. Especially with rumors of Marvel eyeing a 2025 release window for it already. Liu mentioned that he feels extremely excited to go for a sequel.

According to him, there is no pressure to exceed his performance or anything. He further added,

it feels like we’ve established a world and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about.”

He also elaborated on how he thinks that exploring the ten rings further could be a good starting point for a sequel. As he said, “I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know?” As the rings’ power consumed his father and Xu Wenwu, he mentioned that he is curious to see how, “someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings.”

Although an official release date has not been announced yet, there are rumors of Shang-Chi 2 arriving even before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. There are also insider reports claiming that Destin Daniel Cretton will return once again to direct the movie, if those are to be believed, it would be interesting to see which way he decides to take the story in this sequel.
