However, his career-defining role as Iron Man in the MCU made him a global superstar.
The actor is set to return to the franchise in a villainous turn as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers films. The character recently debuted in Fortnite and the terrifying supervillain did heinous things to some beloved heroes. Fans hope the MCU’s version does not replicate what he did to Mr. Fantastic in the game.

The upcoming Fantastic Four film is set to usher in a new era that the MCU has not explored before. The alternate retro-futuristic 60s setting of the film will bring a new aesthetic and feel to the story of Marvel’s first family. Pedro Pascal is set to lead the team as Mr. Fantastic and the group will also be featured in the upcoming Avengers films.
Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. is set to play supervillain Doctor Doom and he and Mr. Fantastic share a very rich history as colleagues. Downey Jr. is rumored to be from the reality of the Fantastic Four film (via @DanielRPK on X) and the two are expected to have scenes together in the Avengers films. The supervillain also made his triumphant debut in Fortnite where he wreaked havoc on some Marvel heroes.
As shared by @SycanYT, Doom does not pull his punches and even collects trophies of every hero he has either defeated/killed. He turns Ben Grimm into a rock throne as he sits on it (via X). While he also made lives worse for Sue and Johnny Storm, Reed Richards suffered the most. The supervillain twisted and molded the hero’s elastic body and turned him into a ball, a fate worse than death itself.

The makers will certainly make Downey Jr.’s Doom as formidable as ever so that the stakes are incredibly high for the Avengers. It seems like a no-brainer that Doom will eventually cross paths with the Fantastic Four and have a confrontation with Reed. It remains to be seen whether this dark storyline is incorporated in some form in the Avengers films.
Former Doctor Doom Star Has Huge Praise For Robert Downey Jr.’s Casting
The superhero fandom received a huge jolt recently with the announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. While the discourse has been understandably mixed, it did create a lot of chatter. Joseph Culp, who played Doom in the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four film, has given his approval for the ‘ideal’ casting choice.
In an interview with TMZ, the actor revealed that while there have been many incarnations of the character over the years, he is terribly excited about what Downey Jr. will bring to the character. He hopes that Downey Jr.’s return will give Marvel a much-needed boost amidst the MCU’s recent struggles. Culp said,
For me, as a fellow actor, I say kudos to Mr. Downey. It’s a magnificent role. He’s a magnificent actor who has proven that time and time again. He has reincarnated himself in many ways, I think, in both his life and his career, so maybe who better to take up the mantle of Doom in this uncertain moment when Marvel, I think many people would agree, needs a big push? So, why not go to Mr. Downey?
After his Oscar win, Downey Jr. recently earned an Emmy nomination for The Sympathizer. His star power is at its peak at the moment and it is indeed wise for Marvel to recruit him back in another iconic role. Fans can expect some serious chaos that Doom will inflict once Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars hit theatres on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively.
