Francis Lawrence declared that Slumberland came to life as he was working on another TV series with Jason Momoa:

“I was doing the Apple TV show See with Jason Momoa (…). I wanted to do something with a lot more joy and a lot more humor, and hope. And that was one of the things I enjoyed the most with this movie. But then, of course, almost immediately, I went back to doing another Hunger Games movie, I was right back into the dystopian world of Hunger Games.”

While Nemo is navigating through grief and heartbreak, she tries to escape her new reality by joining the world of dreams as much as she can. While trying to find her father in Slumberland, Nemo forgets to live in the present moment. Francis Lawrence declared:

(It’s) the idea of trying to find resilience when you experience loss like she does in the story, and the grief she experiences in the story: Finding what is it inside of you that’s gonna help you move on, and carry on, and continue to grow to find joy again.”
