Although there are often times when these actors give their best the script fails them. Such was the case with many actors. Whether a superhero film or not, it is an unfortunate yet inevitable thing. One such case also happened with the fan-favorite character as his journey came to an end with CW’s Smallville. Not only that, but the Arrowverse only ended up making it worse.

CW Failed Superman and His Journey

The CW has introduced many variations of Superman. Starting from Tom Welling to Tyler Hoechlin and even reintroducing Brandon Routh’s famous hero. The conclusion to Smallville had been one many did not agree with. Especially seeing how it completely disregarded the hero’s journey and what he stands for as a hero. To completely give up one’s power like that is a trope often seen in stories.

“Yeah. Bad cw writing.”
You take an overpowered character and you strip them of their power. This is what makes them more relatable and human. This is what frees them from their burdens and somewhat concludes their journey. However, that is not Superman’s story. In a similar comment to that, Smallville actor John Glover, who plays Lionel Luthor on the show, criticized the CW for completely bashing the idea of who Clark Kent is as a character. He is not someone who would easily give up his powers, even if it was for his family. His powers are a big part of who he is. So the actor took to X to express the same.

To Make or Break Superman

The CW, during the Arrowverse event, Crisis of Infinite Earths, brought about various familiar faces as different cameos. The cameo that included Tom Welling saw him interacting with Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor. The scene may be more controversial than Henry Cavill’s Superman actually choosing to kill General Zod. Lex Luthor offered him a piece of Kryoptinite that seemingly was useless in front of Welling’s version of the hero. As things progressed, he ended up throwing the rock as if it were nothing. This may as well be disrespectful towards the symbol of hope as a hero. However, there is hope.

There are many theories regarding how Welling’s character could have worn a watch that included blue Kryptonite, essentially negating the effects of the green Kryptonite. This could also mean that his Superman never really gave up his powers but more so subsided them.
