Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrived with a promise that “new legends” will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come, perfectly setting the center stage for Daisy Ridley’s Rey for the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Rey, who has been Jedi training at the Resistance base with the help of Princess Leia, finally confronts Kylo Ren and by the end of the movie, takes the Skywalker last name after burying both Luke and Leia’s lightsabers. That seemed like a perfect ending, leaving many fans believing that they won’t see much from Ridley anytime soon. Accordingly, LucasFilm’s decision to announce a new Rey Skywalker movie left everyone blindsided, including the actress herself, who has no idea where the story is heading.

What Daisy Ridley Knows About Her Upcoming Rey Skywalker Movie

After the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance came to an end, with Palpatine dead and the remaining Sith forces destroyed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney went quiet about any plans to expand the Star Wars universe on the big screen.

While doing press at Sundance in January for her film Sometimes I Think About Dying, Daisy Ridley suggested she’s leaving Star Wars behind, insisting Rey Skywalker won’t be appearing in any new projects. Much to everyone’s surprise, just a few months later, it was confirmed that Ridley would make a return in the franchise as Rey. Speaking to Collider, the 31-year-old said:

“I will tell you, Steve, when I saw you in Park City, I had not been approached. I was asked some, not by you, but I was asked something when I was there and strangely, people were asking me stuff and I was like, ‘No, I’m not doing another one.’ Then it all happened after I came back. It was such a nice reception. I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that.”

When asked if the new movie will just be a one-off or if it could be the start of another series, she said:

“I know the storyline for one film. That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited.”

At that time, Ridley hadn’t even read the script, and all she had to say about the story was that it’s really “cool.”

Further earlier this month, it was reported that the filming of the Rey Skywalker movie will begin in April of 2024.

While things are starting to pick up pace for Ridley’s movie, it’s all but confirmed that Kevin Feige‘s Star Wars project isn’t happening anytime soon.

There are plans to develop another epic space opera with Taika Waititi in the director’s chair. However, the Next Goal Wins director revealed to ET that he still has four other scripts to finish before he can focus on a new Star Wars adventure.
