Born and brought up in Colombia, Sofia Vergara and her family were living in dangerous times since the country was knee-deep in violence and paramilitary factions. It was a dangerous time to live, even more so since the Vergara family was somewhat of a potential target due to their fairly good economic status.

The actress first appeared on TV with a Pepsi ad but decided to never return since she was a devout Catholic. And soon enough she married her high school sweetheart at the age of 18. Busy studying to become a dentist, her life changed when she split from her husband at the age of 21 and was left alone with her two-year-old son, Manolo.

After moving to the city of Bogota to protect her son from the ongoing violence, Sofia Vergara’s life began to change when she took up modeling and acting jobs again to support herself. And in 1994, she was offered a chance to host a travel show in Miami, which changed the trajectory of her life.

Moving to Miami was a blessing since she could have her sister and mother with her in the US. And just when life felt a bit better, her brother was killed in a kidnapping attempt in Colombia.
