Solo Leveling was one of the most anticipated anime of 2024. The anime did not fail to live up to its hype and delivered one of the best pilot episodes of all time. The pilot revealed a pale Sung Jin-Woo, who is the weakest among the weak category of hunters. Every time he enters a dungeon, he ends up injured, but that does not stop him from entering the next one.

Sung Jin-Woo is trying to earn more to cure his mother from the disease that she is suffering from. He also has a sister who is in school. Since he does not have a father, the duty fell upon his shoulders to look after his family. In the pilot episode, the fans have noticed a fascinating thing. The statues inside the Cartenon Temple reminded the audience of the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who.

The first episode of Solo Leveling saw Sung Jin-Woo and a bunch of hunters enter a D-level dungeon, the lowest rank of all. But there was another dungeon inside that one of much greater threat. It was the Cartenon Temple, and there were several massive stone statues. One of the statues held a scroll that mentioned three commandments – Worship, Praise, and Believe. As the hunters were exploring the second dungeon, the doors suddenly closed.

The statues started moving towards them. While a few hunters approached the door, they were slayed down by the guard statues. The other statues started to approach them and shook up the ground. Suddenly, Sung Jin-Woo remembered the first commandment and told his colleagues to bow down in front of the highest statues, referred to as the God Statue in the commandment. Its eyes were glittering up for firing lasers, but as soon as they bowed, it stopped and changed its face to a creepy and horrific grinning face.

Few hunters felt that they were saved and looked up but were trampled to death by the moving statues. The hunters had to look at every statue, otherwise they would start moving. If they missed anyone, it would cause them to move. The fans believe that this concept was taken from Doctor Who’s Weeping Angels. The Weeping Angels are human-sized statues that cover their faces to look as if they are weeping.

They are quantum-locked killers who can kill humans upon blinking. Due to their amazing speed, blinking for a fraction of a second will result in death. They can also send a person into the past and feed on their unlived days’ energy. The Weeping Angels were first introduced in Doctor Who season 3.

Even though the Cartenon Temple has somewhat similarities with the Weeping Angels, the three commandments were cleverly utilized by Solo Leveling. Thanks to Sung Jin-Woo, they bowed, which fulfilled the first commandment – Worship. The second commandment was praise. As soon as Jin-Woo understood the assignment, he tried to reach the main statue and sang, which fulfilled the second commandment.

But in the process, he was severely injured and lost one of his legs. In the third stage, an altar appeared, which required a certain hunter to be a sacrifice. The remaining hunters blame the captain of the group, Chi-Yul, for being the sacrifice since he was the one who dragged them into the dungeon. But Sung Jin-Woo insisted others leave the dungeon, and he would become the sacrifice since he was in no way to run away.

The others agreed, and the door opened. Sung Jin-Woo climbed up the altar, and others escaped. After he was left alone, he cursed himself for being so weak and despised the idea of dying alone. The statues shot lasers at him, and he tried to fend it off with his sword. But it was all for naught. He wished for another chance, and suddenly an option from the System arrived, which mentioned that a task – ‘Courage of the Weak.’ Sung Jin-Woo had to accept it, otherwise his heart would have stopped in 0.02 seconds.

Since Sung Jin-Woo chose to accept it, it fulfilled the third commandment that said to believe. The weakest hunter, accepting this task will become a massive change in Solo Leveling’s course. From now on, it will become more interesting.
