The Sonic the Hedgehog renaissance is truly upon us, as not only are we getting multiple games, new and old, but we are also getting the next installment in the movie series this year. The previous two movies, Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel, were both incredibly successful movies that ended up playing a massive role in the push for good video game movies.
Now it has been confirmed that a massive character played by an equally massive actor will be officially returning in the movie series’ third outing. With the insane success of the first two movies, it makes sense as to why this legendary actor would want to return. In the first two movies, he plays Dr. Robotnik, and he is none other than Jim Carrey.
Jim Carrey Set to Return as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Jim Carrey is one of the most respected actors working in the industry today. He’s been a part of multiple classics, such as Ace Ventura and The Mask. As originally reported by Variety, Jim Carrey will be reprising his role in the upcoming film. His return in Sonic 3 is sure to put smiles on many faces, as one of the constantly praised aspects of the first two movies was Dr. Robotnik’s character and Carrey’s excellent portrayal of the infamous villain.
What surprised many was that, near the release of the second film, Carrey stated in an interview with Access Hollywood that he was seriously considering retirement after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Carrey believes that he may have done enough and may take a break. He also mentioned that he would only come back to acting if there was a good enough script, so that paints a pretty excellent picture for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 already.
It’s clearly a great time to be a fan of the franchise, as not only has this news been revealed, but we’ve also got official confirmation of the next Sonic game releasing in the fall of this year. Sonic x Shadow Generations is a remaster of Sonic Generations with additional Shadow the Hedgehog content coming to PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Not only that, but Paramount+ is also currently creating a new series centered around Knuckles from the second movie, played excellently by Idris Elba.
The official movie X/Twitter account also teased the return of Dr. Robotnik, along with the logo of the upcoming movie, which is a clear callback to the awesome Sonic Adventure 2 logo.

Last year, we also were treated to Sonic Superstars, which ended up being quite a fun return to 2D Sonic. Ultimately, the franchise is currently going in the best direction it has ever gone in, and it seems like it’s only up from here.
