Sega announced the return of Sonic Generations at today’s State of Play, with Sonic x Shadow Generations bringing the platformer to modern consoles. This time, Shadow, Sonic’s darker and edgier rival, will join the platforming action as a playable character with his own standalone campaign.
During the showcase, Sega revealed a first look at the upcoming remastered platformer that combines modern and classic Sonic. In addition to Sonic’s iconic levels, Sonic x Shadow Generations will see players take on the role of Shadow and embark on darker levels with grimmer enemies the character is known for. The game is set to launch in Autumn 2024.
Sonic x Shadow Generations Unveiled at PlayStation’s State of Play
Sonic Generations was originally released back in 2011 and is one of the more popular 3D Sonic titles. A remaster of the original title is now on the way. The trailer shown at PlayStation’s State of Play starts with levels from the original title – until Shadow, the blue blur’s rival, appears and new levels and bosses with the anti-hero’s characteristic darker tone can be seen.
The remaster will let players play as Shadow the Hedgehog and experience a new, standalone story campaign. With new levels and never-before-seen abilities and powers, the upcoming title is set to offer a fresh experience that should get Shadow fans excited.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is an all-new collection of levels with two very distinct atmospheres. In addition to the new Shadow experience, it’s a complete remaster of the original game, with visual upgrades and expansions to the game’s original 2D and 3D levels.
Sonic x Shadow Generations Adds Shadow to the Mix
Shadow hasn’t been a prominent character in recent Sonic titles, despite being beloved by fans due to his edgier style. The blue blur’s rival made an appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 back in 2001 and went on to receive his own title in 2005. Since then, fans of the anti-hero have mostly been left starving, apart from short appearances in Sonic Forces and DLC.
That is, until he appeared at the end of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, teasing that he’ll be a major part of the upcoming movie that is set to release in December 2024. With Sonic x Shadow Generations slated to launch in the fall, the title will be out in time before the movie to get fans hyped.
Sonic x Shadow Generations will add yet another platformer to the list, with the most recent being Sonic Superstars, which launched in October 2023 and saw a return to classic 2D levels. The upcoming remaster will be a combination of the beloved 2D levels and modern 3D gameplay, with Shadow gameplay added to the mix.
Sonic x Shadow Generations is slated to launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Autumn 2024.
