Over the last couple of months, many different subscription-based products have begun to increase their prices to meet the current financial state of the world. One of these subscription services is PS Plus, which, back in September, saw a large rise in price.

So far, all three of the PS Plus subscription methods have had a price increase of nearly 30% all across the world. Due to this rise in cost, many gamers have been wondering why this price has increased, and thanks to an interview between Sony and Barron’s, we now have an answer.

Why has Sony Joined in With the Price Increase regarding the PS Plus Subscription?

PS Plus receives a 30% price increase, and gamers are not happy.

Since September, Sony has increased the prices of all the 12-month PS Plus subscription methods, with the Essential bundle originally costing $59.99 and now costing $79.99, the Extra bundle originally costing $99.99 and now costing £134.99, and the Premium bundle originally costing $119.99 and now costing $159.99.

Originally, when this change was announced, the reasoning was that Sony intended to increase the price to provide higher-quality games and value-added benefits to the different subscription methods, such as the new Sony Pictures Core, which is being added to the Premium bundle.

Since this change in pricing, gamers have been eager to receive answers as to why the prices have changed on these beloved subscription methods, and now, thanks to the interview with Barren’s, we know why.

The reasoning behind this price increase is that Sony believes it had no choice but to increase the prices in an attempt to make the PS Plus great. Over the last year, there have been many ups and downs for PS Plus, especially after its changes last year, which brought these new subscription tiers onto the consoles.

Now, these changes are beginning to take shape, and gamers can see the benefits of each subscription tier, but some still believe that the prices do not justify how much they cost, and it has caused a major division in the fan base.

What do Gamers Think about This Change in Pricing?

Sony takes to an interview to explain why they chose to increase PS Plus prices.

Since this change in pricing, the gaming community has been split as to whether or not this is a good thing or a bad thing. For obvious reasons, there are more gamers who believe this is a bad thing, as a price rise in any regard is never a good thing, but there are some who still argue it is for the better.

A fair amount of the gaming community agrees with Sony, as some gamers believe that to get a better PS Plus experience, it will be worth paying extra. The reasoning behind this is that for a 12-month subscription, you may be paying upwards of $160, but throughout the year, you could get $400 worth of free games.

This argument doesn’t work for the whole community, unfortunately, as gamers who have invested a lot of time with Sony. If you have already purchased the games that become available through the PS Plus subscription, they feel they lose a major part of the subscription’s reason to join.

So far, the changes to PS Plus from last year have been making a major impact on the gaming community, as gamers are beginning to gain more access to games they may of forgotten about or never wanted to pay money for.

For now, however, this still leaves much of the gaming community wondering when “higher quality games” and “value-added benefits” will become available, if at all.
