Sony launched the Last of Us on PC in a questionable state. Several players have been expressing their problems while playing this game. It is a poorly optimized game full of bugs. The game was bombarded with streams of negative reviews on Steam. Mostly, it’s the bottom-of-the-tub games that receive so much hatred, but apparently, Sony’s Last of Us joined along that list.

Most people who’ve completed the journey of Joel and Ellie in Last of Us on HBO and are planning to hop on the PC version of the game must be aware of a few problems. The technical issues arising in Last of Us are related to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). It also depends on the system requirements of the game.

Why does Last of Us stutter?

Last of Us stuttering arises from the high usage of CPU and GPU memory. Albeit the game only asks for a VRAM specification of 4GB, playing this game at the lowest preset in 720p can utilize as much as 7GB of VRAM. Now, if we’re talking about running this game on high graphics and native resolution, it consumed nearly 14GB of VRAM. So even if players have GPUs with 8GB of VRAM like the RTX 3070 Ti, which is a massively powerful graphics card at the moment, they’ll still face stuttering.

Tweaking with the DLSS and FSR in Last of Us won’t directly enhance the game’s performance. These features work by lowering the game resolution, which makes the entire ordeal dependent on the Graphics Card. Basically, the load is reduced from the GPU, but it concentrates on the processor. As of now, players won’t be able to fix the issue of stuttering. The game performance won’t increase even if played with DLSS and FSR on a system with RTX 4080 and Core i9-13900K in Ultra Performance mode.

The Last of Us has several port-related issues which impact the overall performance of the game. High consumption of GPU and CPU can lower the performance, which can either lead to stuttering or hitches. Tweaking the dense graphic menu in the game does little to no optimization, considering how highly demanding this is.

The game developer, Naughty Dog, expressed their concern on this issue and answered the players’ problem in a tweet stating they’re working on a fix. There will be patches released for the game that can fix issues with the Oodle library. But to make the game stop stuttering, further optimization is required to reduce VRAM requirements and CPU usage which can be challenging to accomplish.
