As we are in the year of PlayStation’s 25th birthday, it seems only fitting that Sony announce the next generation in one of the world’s most-loved gaming consoles.

In an interview with Wired, Mark Cermy promoted the new console’s features highlighted starting with the AMD’s Ryzen with the 7nm Zen 2 architecture, and with a Radeon Navi-family GPU which includes support for real-time ray-tracing rendering.

Cermy also emphasized the need the new console demands for fast loading times and larger bandwidth as a way of making games more immersive by stating how the PS5 expects to ship with an SSD hard drive. The new hard drive will also support the required content streaming from disc for 8K graphics resolutions.

If all that specs talk doesn’t sell units, how about the fact that this next-generation console has backwards compatibility with Sony’s current console the PlayStation 4 meaning the current console’s highest-rated games including DC’s Injustice, Red Dead Redemption and Marvel’s Spider-Man will still be available on the new console.

While no official release date has been revealed yet, fans will have to wait for further announcements including when they can pre-order a console and what game deals will come with it. Earlier reports have predicted a 2020 release, but the question remains whether or not the console will arrive to help celebrate the new decade and will it create enough of a buzz to make everyone forget about the failure that was the PlayStation Classic.

The PlayStation 4 was released in 2013 with its predecessor the PlayStation 3 being released in 2006. So, if this next-generation console is released in 2020, fans can look forward a third decade welcoming a new PlayStation.

With no permanent title announced for the next-generation console and Sony officially choosing to avoid calling it the PlayStation 5, simply being credited as “Sony’s next-gen console”, Sony is hoping that this new addition to the gaming world will introduce new gaming enthusiasts to their already extensive fan base.

Online gaming apps and software such as products from Google and Microsoft have proven to be a wave of the future in recent years, however this latest installment to the PlayStation brand showcases how while it is quick, easy and more sociable to game online, there is still a place in the market to own and operate physical machines and derive the exact same pleasure in today’s audiences as the original PlayStation console did in 1994 and the Sega MegaDrive did in the late 1980s.
