Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 character was considered one of the most favorite characters from the multiverse in last year’s animated movie, Across the Spider-Verse. The canceled multiplayer edition of the game continues to surprise fans as every single leak about it has continued to impress fans who feel a great opportunity was missed.

The leaked trailer indicates that the online game could have featured a plethora of Spider-People for players to have a go at, featuring several prominent versions of the web-slinger. The online title was classified as a Premium Multiplayer Open-World Action-Adventure AAA title, featuring what’s mentioned as a multiplayer sandbox game with “Unparalleled Heart“.

One of those characters that stood out was Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 which was a standout favorite from last year’s animated movie. Oscar Isaac voiced the character in the movie, who comes off as a “Ninja Vampire” who lacks a sense of humor and is the leader of the Spider-Society.

Spider-Society features variations of the web-slinger from across the multiverse tasked with keeping the multiverse in check and protecting it and the online multiplayer title looked headed in the same direction to bring together as many Spider-People as possible for the massive sandbox live-service game.

The poor performance of live-service games, however, could have been a major factor in the title getting canceled.

Recent Live-Service Failures Have Led to Several Canceled Projects

The market research done by the team which was also leaked along with the teaser trailer for the canceled online game stated that between 2021 and 2022, 9 million players played online games, and this was the fanbase targetted for the live-service game.

To make the game highly replayable, there were also plans for planned releases daily, weekly, and monthly, with content refreshed seasonally and annually. Each of the Multiverse versions of the web-slinger then gets shown off in the presentation, each with individual roles and unique strengths. Fan-favorite Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 was classified as a Brawler who would come out as being “Gifted, but arrogant“.

Another surprising reveal found in the leaked plans was the studio’s plans to connect the web-slinger’s single-player games released so far and the upcoming Wolverine title, connecting them both to the online multiplayer title in what was titled the “Insomniac Marvel Story Universe.”

The game was planned for a 2025 alpha release followed by a 2026 beta version and a full release with post-launch content planned until 2030, divided into 8 seasons. While the entire plan looks rather good on paper, live-service games have suffered a lot barring a couple of successful titles which could have been the deciding factor behind the cancellation.
