Sony Pictures seems to be shooting for the stars with its sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse landing with a prodigious splash at the box office as well as amongst fans and critics. Thanks to its electrifying and enchanting animation, however, Spider-Verse 2 is now reportedly also eyeing an Academy Award nomination at next year’s Oscars ceremony.
Besides, after all the appalling working conditions that the animators were put through (which were horrible enough to make about a hundred of them quit the movie altogether), it’s only fair that the film gets the recognition it truly deserves.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Might Receive An Oscar Nod

With stunning filmmaking that is bound to render the audience speechless and ingeniously beautiful animation that definitely deserves an award, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has most certainly earned all the rave reviews it has amassed so far. Making a hefty figure of more than $500 million worldwide, the Sony sequel has not only surpassed its Oscar-winning predecessor but also brought justice to its beloved legacy.
Since Into the Spider-Verse landed an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to think that its much more successful sequel could be subjected to a similar fate or better. As per a report by Variety though, Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Across the Spider-Verse is unquestionably worthy of an Oscar nomination for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards next year.

Will Spidey Make History?
Up until now, the only animated movies to have been blessed enough to get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars have been Disney productions, including Beauty and the Beast (1991), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010). So, if Sony’s Spider-Verse 2 were to bag an Oscar nomination in the said category, it would be the first-ever non-Disney animated film to have done so.
While the Oscar Isaac-led masterpiece also doubles as a Marvel production thanks to the deal that the studio struck with Sony back in 2015, the franchise’s parent company, Disney, had no hand whatsoever in either producing or distributing the movie. In fact, once the film has culminated its theatrical run, it will be airing on Netflix for streaming, not on Disney+.
So, in the rare case that it does get its hand on an Oscar nod for Best Picture, it will certainly be a record-breaking feat for not only Across the Spider-Verse but the studio as well.
