The homage that Marvel Studios gave to the late comic book legend was something that most people cherished, including the stars who played the characters he created. Thus, when the deleted scenes from 2012’s The Avengers were released after the initial film, fans could not help but love the artist when he tried to help Steve Rogers socialize with a waitress after rejoining society.

Quite literally the man that made the creation, and subsequent overtaking of the Hollywood industry by Marvel Studios possible, Stan Lee was more larger than life than the characters that he created throughout his career as a comic book artist. Thus, seeing him in films with characters from Marvel Comics was always a delight.

But one scene that fans were not aware existed was one of his cameos in 2012’s The Avengers, where he has a wholesome interaction with Captain America.

This scene was also impactful for Chris Evans‘ character of Steve Rogers as this shows him walking down a street in NYC and taking a seat facing the Stark Tower. He was recently brought back to the modern world, which makes him feel out of place. Then, a waitress at the cafe asks him whether he was there to see Iron Man fly by, to which he responds by saying he’ll save it for another time.

The waitress then asks him to stay as long as he likes because there was free WiFi, for which Rogers confuses it with radio. As the waitress walks away, we can see Lee in the background, turning towards him and clarifying that she was actually interested in him, and that she wanted him to ask for her cellphone number. He said:

“Ask for her number, you moron”

While it may not have been much, like most of his cameos, what it had in common was the emotion of connection it evoked for the audience with the creator of the superheroes we see and love today on-screen.

While his cameos in the MCU may be the most popular in the world, Lee hasn’t just been showing up for the films by Marvel Studios.

His first major appearance in a Marvel project was all the way back in 1989 for a TV film titled The Trial of The Incredible Hulk. Later on, he also appeared in the first installment of the Spider-Man trilogy made by Sam Raimi along with the rest that came later. He also made an appearance in 20th Century Fox’s Marvel projects like 2005’s Fantastic Four before eventually becoming a regular in the MCU until his death in 2018.
