Star Wars Hunters is an upcoming free-to-play arena combat game developed by Zynga and Lucasfilm games for Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS mobile devices. The game has been pushed further back and will not be available to play till 2024 arrives.
The Star Wars franchise is one of the most iconic ones out there. The franchise initially released games which were self-published through Lucas Arts. After that, the rights to the IP were received by Electronic Arts. Since then, many Star Wars have come out, which were developed by EA.
The likes of which were Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Jedi series. The series and its rights have been distributed, with plenty of Star Wars Games in the works. Star Wars Hunters happens to be one of them.
Official Statement from Zynga on Star Wars Hunters Delay
Star Wars Hunters is a team-based multiplayer game. The game will reportedly be set after the fall of the Galactic Empire. The locations revealed so far are some of the most iconic ones in the franchise.
One can choose from the game’s character classes: Storm Troopers, Rebels, and Bounty Hunters. The game was in development and was announced back in the year 2021. The game has seen plenty of delays from the studio known for games like Words with Friends and Farmville.
Zynga is also known for many iconic mobile games and was recently acquired by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games’ parent company. There was an official statement from Zynga on Twitter/X regarding the latest delay pushing the game to 2024. The statement read:
Dear Hunters fans,
We are hard at work bringing our vision of Star Wars: Hunters to life and are committed to creating the best experience for our players.
The statement further read:
To ensure we meet that highest level of quality, we have made the difficult decision to delay the worldwide launch of Star Wars Hunters to 2024.
The statement also mentioned the soft launch, which occurred in January 2023. The number of features currently being worked on before the game launches was mentioned in the statement. This includes featuring a Ranked Mode in the game, confirming that the game will indeed be competitive.
Apart from that, the gameplay mechanics in Star Wars Hunters are also getting updates to ensure there aren’t any rough edges at launch. At the same time, all of this sounds amazing. The fact is that the game has been delayed too many times.
Star Wars Hunters was announced in 2021 and targeted a release date in the same year. After that, it was delayed to 2022. Then, it was subsequently delayed to 2023. Now, once again, there has been a delay.
The reasons for the delay are unknown, and Zynga has only revealed so far that their “top priority remains to ensure players have the best possible experience”. This is Zynga’s first console game. That is because, apart from Android and iOS, the game is also being released for the Nintendo Switch.
Star Wars Hunters is Not the Only Upcoming Star Wars Game
Speaking of Star Wars games and delays, Star Wars Outlaws immediately comes to mind. The game was announced in 2020. The game was hyped around as the first open-world, non-linear Star Wars game. Ubisoft is currently working on the game. The studio also made headlines recently as it laid off more than 100 of its employees.
Before the latest delay, the game had a release date set in 2023. The game was not directly pushed to the other fiscal year, but in the earnings report by Ubisoft, it was reported as “the other large game”.
Other Star Wars games are currently in the pipeline and will come in due course of time. One of them is being worked upon by Respawn, the studio responsible for developing the ever-amazing Titanfall 2 and, more recently, Apex Legends.
There is also a Star Wars strategy game in development by Bit Reactor. Quantic Dream, known for titles like Heavy Rain and Detroit Become Human, is also working on a Star Wars title called Star Wars Eclipse. With so many Star Wars games in the pipeline, it will be interesting to see which ones can do justice to the series, and which ones prove to be lukewarm.
