“Asking for something as simple as a chair wasn’t so simple.”: Starfield’s Development Was a Mess, and if History Repeats, We May as Well Give Up on Elder Scrolls 6

After Starfield's mediocre reception, Elder Scrolls 6 has a lot to learn to avoid the same mistakes that were made during Starfield's development.

When it comes to game development, there are a lot of bumps that can cause the train to go off the rails, and Starfield was no exception to that. This can lead to a lot of concerns regarding future Bethesda titles, just like Elder Scrolls 6, as even more development issues could pop up throughout the process.

Even though developing a game isn’t very simple, many developers manage to create a process that works for them while ensuring the project doesn’t spread too thin throughout their teams. Sadly, Starfield wasn’t so lucky, as the project was spread too thin, and this could lead to concerns that Elder Scrolls 6 could follow with the same mistake.

Over the years, game development has grown from small projects that could easily be created by a handful of developers to major projects that take thousands of developers working around the clock to just about meet a deadline.

Starfield was one of these projects, as it had over 500+ developers working overtime to try and bring the project to a close, and to make matters worse, these developers were spread over multiple different studios around the world, which led to a lot of confusion, delays, and panic as many studios had no idea what the others were doing.

This meant that many developers had to delay their work by sending requests up the chain to the directors at each studio and waiting for acceptance before finally working on the project. Something as simple as putting a chair into the game created a large amount of questions as the directors at each studio had to check what was needed to make it work and whether or not other departments needed to be included to make it work.

This information was revealed during the Games Developer Conference in San Francisco by lead quest designer Will Shen and former Fallout 76 lead level designer Daryl Brigner during a joint talk in regards to the collaboration between level and quest design teams in projects as they discussed its importance to provide consistency and efficiency.

Elder Scrolls 6 Will Hopefully Be a Bigger and Better Experience Than Starfield Could Ever Be

Elder Scrolls 6 could be in trouble if it doesn't resolve the development process in Bethesda.
Elder Scrolls 6 could be in trouble if it doesn’t resolve the development process in Bethesda.

When we look at Elder Scrolls 6 in comparison to Starfield, both games have been in development hell for many years and have built up so much hype over the years that it would be ridiculous to see them fail at something so simple as a lack of content.

However, Starfield may have been filled with plenty of places to explore, but it was sadly very bland in some aspects. If Elder Scrolls 6 is going to surpass Starfield, it will need to keep the project to a reasonably sized team that doesn’t need to outsource certain development projects to other studios.

So far, we do not know how far into production Elder Scrolls 6 is, but it would be understandable if the development team took a step back and focused on the project after the panic of finishing Starfield.
