If gamers were to look at the current Steam top sellers (at the time of writing), there would be no doubt that they could rhyme off several of the titles that feature in the top 100. But what may be surprising are those entries that appear in the top ten in October 2023.

No doubt many people will be expecting some of the most hyped games of the year to feature quite highly in the list, even appearing in the top ten. A certain space exploration game, perhaps, or maybe even the expansion for a 2020 RPG set in a dystopian future, or even a recent Souls-like game with a dual-reality premise. Well, it may surprise some to see the current Steam top sellers!

Steam Top Sellers: A Look at What’s Selling Well in October 2023

10. Endless Dungeon

Steam top sellers
Only just released, Endless Dungeon, published by Sega, already features in the top ten.

The first game to feature in the top ten spot of Steam top sellers may only have been released on 19 October, but it already finds itself in good standing. Developed by Amplitude Studios and released by Sega, this title is available for consoles and PCs, with a Nintendo Switch release still to be announced.

Touted as a successor to 2014’s Dungeon of the Endless, Endless Dungeon sees players controlling a trio of characters to battle through an abandoned space station. Co-op mode is also available if players want to bring in some friends to deal with the never-ending monsters. Players can pick up the Standard Edition for £24.99, with the Last Wish Edition retailing at £34.99.

9. Destiny 2

Steam top sellers
Destiny 2 may still be in the top ten due to the Halloween in-game event.

Despite being released back in 2017, Bungie’s Destiny 2 features in the top ten nearly six years later. With various bundles being released over the years since and most recently, the ‘Festival of the Lost‘ in-game event launched on October 17, just in time for the ‘spooky season,’ this may be why this title is so high on the list.

While Destiny 2 is a free-to-play download from Steam, the various bundles do come at an expense, ranging from £6.59 up to £39.99. The latter includes an annual pass. Looking at the reviews overall, the online first-person shooter still holds as ‘very positive.’

8. Team Fortress 2

Another free-to-play entry on the Steam top-sellers list is Team Fortress 2, which again may be seen as a surprising entry in the top ten, given that it was first released by Valve Corporation back in 2007. Described as one of the ‘most popular online action games of all time,’ Team Fortress 2 is constantly delivering free updates.

But how does a game that is 16 years old still feature so highly all these years later? Judging by the reviews, it’s still very much a fun game, and given that it is free-to-play, this makes it more appealing to people who are looking to pick up something with no expense.

7. Call of Duty

Call of Duty: Warzone saw unprecedented popularity during the COVID pandemic.

The next instalment on the list may be one of the least surprising, given how successful the franchise has been. Call of Duty saw an influx of players join during the COVID pandemic and Warzone, and the free-to-play multiplayer saw millions worldwide jump aboard. The success of the multiplayer was unparalleled and caught Activision completely by surprise.

With the release of Modern Warfare 3 and the Halloween event for Warzone, it’s no surprise that this franchise is still featured so heavily in the sales chart. Activision has confirmed recently that the franchise will continue for at least another four years, so it will be interesting to see if the games continue to pop up in the top ten.

6. Steam Deck

While fans may have expected games to populate the Steam top sellers, it is Valve’s hardware that features prominently in the top ten, and it seems that the appeal of hand-held gaming is still as popular as ever. The Steam Deck, which launched in February 2022, has received high praise, and it appears that it is still selling well a year and a half later.

Reported to have sold 1.62 million units in 2022, the Steam Deck is expected to surpass 3 million unit sales this year (2023). No surprise there that it features in the Steam top sellers list then. There has been speculation about a Steam Deck 2, but nothing has been confirmed as yet, and if true, it would be several years away.

5. Apex Legends

Apex Legends’ appearance as one of the top sellers on Steam is no surprise.

The award-winning game from Respawn Entertainment is another free-to-play title that features on the Steam top sellers. Like other titles that feature in the top ten, Apex Legends also has a special event running for the Halloween season, and players are invited to take part in ‘Trick N’ Treats Trios.

Regarded by many as one of the best battle royale games, Apex Legends still retains millions of players worldwide, and despite many other titles falling by the wayside, this title has gone from strength to strength since its release in 2019.

4. Baldur’s Gate 3

No surprise to see Baldur’s Gate 3 in the Steam top sellers.

Regarded as a possible Game of the Year contender, Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 has received critical acclaim since its launch. It is no surprise to see it amongst the Steam top sellers; maybe only that it doesn’t feature further towards the top of the list.

Taking inspiration from the Dungeons and Dragons franchise, the third instalment had an early launch in August for Windows and a PlayStation launch in September. An Xbox release is touted for a release towards the end of the year. With some reviewers giving Baldur’s Gate 3 a near-perfect score, there is no doubt that the title will stay in the Steam top sellers for some time.

3. Warframe

A recurring theme with the Steam top sellers is the appearance of free-to-play games, and Digital Extremes’ 2013 third-person shooter is no exception. Warframe, like other titles in this list, has content made available for the Halloween season, which may account for the uptake in sales.

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, Warframe was nominated for various awards in the years that followed, and judging by the reviews on Steam, the game itself was described as highly addictive and unique. This no doubt accounts for why it appears in the top ten nearly a decade after its release.

2. Dead by Daylight

Steam top sellers
It has been reported that Dead by Daylight has attracted around 50 million players.

The multiplayer survival horror game Dead by Daylight was initially released back in 2016 but still maintains its popularity to this day. Developed by Behaviour Interactive, the game is available for only £14.99, and whether you favour the role of the killer or a survivor, this is one to pick up if you haven’t already.

Dead by Daylight sees its ‘Haunted by Daylight‘ event return for another year, and it could be that the benefit of a specialist Halloween event may be what has seen it near the peak of the Steam top sellers.

1. Counter-Strike 2

Steam top sellers
Despite only releasing in September, Counter-Strike 2 is the most popular in terms of sales on Steam.

It may be surprising to learn what leads the pack in the Steam top sellers list given some of the titles that have come before it. Valve’s very own free-to-play title, Counter-Strike 2, developed as an update to the original 2012 game of the same name, sits at the top despite only launching a matter of weeks ago.

A multiplayer first-person shooter, Counter-Strike 2 is much like its predecessor in that it puts two teams against each other, the terrorists and the counter-terrorists. At the time of writing, the title was receiving very positive reviews.

What’s clear from this list is that many of the titles featured are free-to-play, and many have specialist Halloween events scheduled, which could be the trend in which they are appearing so highly in the Steam top sellers. No doubt the standings will change considerably in the coming weeks, and it will be interesting to see how this list looks at the close of the year.
