Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly reaching into every field and profession, and although it may be unsurprising, the gaming industry will not go unaffected by such a tool. As AI is becoming more popular it has been seen doing everything from after school homework assignments to writing screenplays for major motion pictures.

Marvel has made headlines recently over the fact that the opening credits for Secret Invasion were created using AI generated technology. Even the writers here at FandomWire submit their writing to be run through a program that detects computer generated text. Now, Steam, the video game distribution service run by developer Valve, is the most recent entity to make news in the world of AI.

It was recently reported that Valve has been banning any Steam games if its’ programs detect AI generated art, unless those submitting the title can prove ownership of the intellectual property. This information comes from Twitter user, @simoncarless, who posted an excerpt from a Steam denial template. The post says the following:

“After reviewing, we have identified intellectual property in [Game Name Here] which appears to belongs to one or more third parties. In particular, [Game Name Here] contains art assets generated by artificial intelligence that appears to be relying on copyrighted material owned by third parties.”

“As the legal ownership of such Al-generated art is unclear, we cannot ship your game while it contains these Al-generated assets, unless you can affirmatively confirm that you own the rights to all of the IP used in the data set that trained the Al to create the assets in your game.”

“We are failing your build and will give you one (1) opportunity to remove all content that you do not have the rights to from your build. If you fail to remove all such content, we will not be able to ship your game on Steam, and this app will be banned.”

Clearly, Steam is facing major issues since the popularity of artificial intelligence, particularly in the area of intellectual property. There is also talk that Steam will be searching through the text of games to make sure they are not using AI inappropriately. This all introduces a larger concern in any field using artificial intelligence, when it comes to the type of legal disputes that could arise from an improper copyright violation. As Chat GPT and other programs begin to take on more tasks, companies will need to ensure words or images are not being plagiarized.

The question of whether AI generated art will change the world of gaming is something that could be theorized for days with no clear answer, but we can look at what we know so far. As of right now, the use of AI for anything creative is still very new and both exciting and concerning.

The exciting part is where our society might benefit from the technology and further advance ourselves, while eliminating unnecessary hardships. This could be in the medical field, the legal field, or even the gaming field. As AI becomes more advanced, it will be easier for game developers to avoid laboring over mindless code, and errors will be more quickly identified. This is something we are already beginning to see in the gaming. There may even come a time when entire games can be created without any human involvement.

The concerning side of AI generated art, at this point in time, is not the Ex Machina style science fiction story or the apocalyptic takeover, but simply the loss of jobs. Those in the gaming industry, as well as in several other fields, are worried that when artificial intelligence becomes too advanced, big developers will no longer want to pay to employ humans.

Even as the Writers Guild of America strike currently pushes on, we are seeing major motion picture studios testing the waters of AI to see how many writers are really needed. Thankfully, artificial intelligence does not appear to be a step ahead of writers and programmers now, but the door is open in a way that might be scary for the future.

Should we continue pushing artificial intelligence to advance our society or are we dooming ourselves to a gloomy future of mega corporations finding ways to save money and cut jobs? If video games have taught us anything, the world should tread ever so lightly into this new way of life. How do you feel about the use of AI generated art in gaming? Make sure to leave a comment and express your thoughts on the issue.
