The series will be based on the 2007 book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany by Donald L. Miller and follows the actions of the 100th Bombardment Group a.k.a “Bloody Hundredth” of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

With a massive cast full of well-known Hollywood stars, the show has a massive budget of $250-300 million, which even puts big-budget Marvel movies like The Marvels to shame. Band of Brothers and The Pacific also had massive budgets of $125 million and $200 million respectively.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have been developing the upcoming World War II-based miniseries, Masters of the Air, since 2012. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the show is expected to contain nine or ten episodes, at a total production cost of over $250 million, which is quite massive for a miniseries.

To put things into perspective, Marvel Studios’ latest movie, The Marvels, reportedly had a budget of $220 million. Masters of the Air is reportedly very similar to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010), which was also developed by Spielberg and Hanks. The upcoming series will specifically focus on the 100th Bombardment Group or Bloody Hundredth of the Eighth Air Force.

Multiple sources have claimed that Steven Spielberg’s son Sawyer Spielberg will be appearing as Lt. Roy Frank Claytor in the highly anticipated series. Apart from him, the show is also expected to feature some well-known Hollywood stars like Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Raff Law, and Barry Keoghan.

The series faced several delays during production due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, Masters of the Air is all set to premiere on Apple TV+ on January 26, 2024. As for Speilberg, he will be serving as an executive producer for many upcoming flicks like Transformers One (2024).
