Sony Pictures posted a video on their Twitter that showed the audience what Pavitr Prabhakar’s Spider-Man is going to look like. Obviously donning the usual red and blue color theme of the original, this particular variant’s costume is far brighter and flaunts the clothes of India. In the video, Mumbattan, which is based on the “70s comic books of India,” is basically described as “Manhattan but in reverse, so instead of it going up it goes down.” In an interview with Empire, producer Christopher Miller talked about Spider-Man India and what his world looks like.

The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101 which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic book look.”

The name, Mumbattan, could very well be a combination of Manhattan and Mumbai, a city in India. We sure are excited to see this variant of Spider-Man in the movie! Although, there’s a huge chance that Pavitr Prabhakar would not be a significant character.

Pavitr Prabhakar is a Spider-Man variant who lives in the city of Mumbai with his uncle and aunt, Bhim and Maya. It’s interesting to note that these names are quite similar to the OG Spider-Man’s uncle and aunt, Ben and May. He gets his powers from an ancient yogi. The comic book series featuring the Indian Spider-Man, Spider-Man: India, is fairly recent too, having been released between 2004-2005.

Comparing the two worlds of Spider-Man, the character of Mary Jane is called Meera Jain in Earth 50101. Similarly, Harry Osborn is Hari Oberoi and Norman Osborn is Naman Oberoi. The story, though, remains more or less the same. While the events are quite similar, Spider-Man: India put the usual story through a completely different culture.

Ryan Lynch of Screen Rant stated that while the character has “really clever deviations from his American counterparts,” he still “retains everything take makes Spider-Man great.”
