Hellboy is the first major movie by David Harbour after he rose to prominence by playing Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things series. With Hellboy, David Harbour expected that everyone would love to watch it, especially after the Guillermo del Toro movie adaptations which were released earlier in 2004 and 2008 and were hugely popular but after the reboot came out, the results were quite contradictory to what he expected.

The 2019 Hellboy movie was both slammed by the critics and was also a major box office bomb. As per the Black Widow actor, he felt the box office results were very difficult to digest, earlier although he felt that the people didn’t need it, still, he was optimistic about it:

“It was a very difficult experience because I wanted a lot out of it. I really like [Mike Mignola, Hellboy creator], I like that character,” he says. “And then immediately when it began, even when it was announced, I realised that people did not want that character reinvented. I was very naive and optimistic about what we were going to do.”

But even after Hellboy almost tanked his career David Harbour didn’t stop him and later proved himself with movies like Extraction, No Sudden Move, and Black Widow.

While speaking to GQ, David Harbour revealed that following the disastrous performance of Hellboy, he went to the Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds for some talks who had also a similar experience after his Green Lantern Movie. Even though he didn’t know Reynolds that much still after the first-day performance of the movie, David called him and said:

“Hey man, I just need to know something. You know Green Lantern? Huge flop for you. What the fu*k is that like, because I think I’m going to hit that right now. Am I gonna be okay? Am I gonna survive this?”

David Harbour didn’t explain in detail about what did Reynolds say but he mentioned that Reynolds was “sweet” about it.
