Jonathan Nolan, who is one of the showrunners of Fallout, was always keen on creating the series, however, studios were always hesitant to invest money in an idea like this. This suddenly changed with the success of HBO’s The Last of Us as studios saw the opportunity and greenlit the production of Fallout. Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter,

“I was delighted [when The Last of Us was released]. To your point, when Todd [Howard, game developer] and I first sat down for lunch, the bar was not only not high, it was non-existent – especially in the TV space. You would have people adapting a first-person game and [a studio would be like,] ‘So the show is going to have a first-person point of view.’ No, that’s a grammatical tick of the game, that’s not how you adapt it. It’s always nice to be the first one. But when somebody makes something as good as The Last of Us, it makes it easier, because suddenly everyone understands what’s possible.”

In some ways, The Last of Us and Fallout franchises are similar as both of them are set in a post-apocalyptic world where the protagonists must survive in a world full of strange creatures.

In the gaming industry, these franchises have been fan-favorites for a very long time and now, it seems like they are expanding their influence. It is still unclear how true Fallout will remain to its source material, but fans will find out everything when the series drops on 11th April on Amazon Prime Video.

HBO’s The Last of Us has been praised for its accurate adaptation as the first season successfully adapted Naughty Dog’s 2013 video game of the same name. Deadline has confirmed that the production of the second season is in full swing as the showrunners plan to adapt the game’s 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II. The first season premiered on January 15, 2023, and instantly became a hit among the fans. The show won numerous awards, including eight Primetime Emmy Awards.

In the past, we’ve seen many movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Five Nights at Freddy’s dominating the global box office, so naturally, IGN has reported that many others are planning to create live-action adaptations of many popular video games, including Borderlands, Minecraft, and God of War. However, it is to be noted that not every adaptation was successful as some failed miserably at the box office.
