Since Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was first released earlier this year, it may be safe to say that it has seen a less-than-favorable reception. Indeed, the game which was meant to spin off from the hugely successful Batman Arkham franchise has not hit the same heights as fans would have hoped for.
Despite the popularity that the source material has, in no small part to the graphic novels and movie depictions, the game is regarded by a huge amount of fans as a flop. Those fans who were desperate to be able to experience the Suicide Squad for themselves have been left bitterly disappointed and this in turn has had a knock-on effect with the publishers.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – Financial Woes?
As per the article on the Financial Times, we can see the discussion about the drop in share prices and the dire straits that could lead Warner Bros. Discovery to make sales. It is hoped that by doing this it would avoid the necessity of a corporate breakup which could in turn see them take years to recover from.
It should be noted that rather alarmingly, this is the second time in the last decade that the WB games division has found itself at the center of potential sales. The amount of which has been rumored to be around the $4 billion mark and despite affirmation that the company wants to remain in video games, recent fortunes may not make this financially viable.
Whilst it is clear that it is clearly a challenging time in the industry with studios closing and numerous layoffs, it is perhaps no surprise that a game that has been performing so poorly is affecting the fortunes of some larger companies in turn. What remains to be seen is how they will turn this around.
Are We Seeing The Downfall of Warner Bros. Discovery?
Despite the video game division having huge success with the Harry Potter-inspired game – Hogwarts Legacy, the titles that followed have not performed as favorably and this has in no small part led to discussions about selling off its games.
Despite the poor fortunes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it was reported recently that Rocksteady was planning further content for the game. However, with the dwindling player numbers, this may be seen by many as too little, too late to save the games’ fortunes.
It’s clear that the game developed by Rocksteady has not performed as well financially as publishers would have hoped and this may have led to the discussion in regards to selling off some of its titles. Unfortunately, it appears that this may indeed be another nail in the coffin for WB Discovery.
