If the Tweet is right, our collective anxieties and anticipation for a solid Scream game are well taken care of, if Supermassive handles things. The BAFTA-winning game studio is known for masterful storytelling that blends immersive gameplay with cinematic experiments and eerie, cryptic themes. Until Dawn is one of their best-known PlayStation 4 titles, a game that weaves its stories around a group of teenagers who choose to spend their weekend at a ski lodge. The plot revolves around one of their friends disappearing, marking the beginning of a series of bizarre and ghastly events.

If Scream is going to be part of Supermassive’s storytelling project, we can expect newer systems like the PlayStation 5 to make the best use of new technology to up the ‘horror game’ a little. If there’s something a DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and horror games have in common – it’s a guaranteed experience that stays in players’ psyche for a long time to come.

Based on the studio’s history of mixing cinematic sequences and action-packed gameplay, we can have a few guesses about the rumoured Scream game. More importantly, there’s a lot of source material for the studio to take advantage of. The game can be set around the happenings of Scream movies that revolve around killers on a psychotic killing spree. Ghostface is rightfully the most iconic villain to come out of the series, as first seen in Scream (1996).

A night in the woods and a bunch of teenagers with a killer on the loose may be themes that Supermassive has dabbled with in the past, but Scream’s larger-than-life stories that dive deeper into a killer’s head can serve as a canvas for innovative gameplay sequences. Switching between the survivors and Ghostface? Living through the different traumatic experiences of the killer as we explore their life? A survivor going rogue and giving birth to newfound psychopathic tendencies? There’s so much that can be done. We hope to see Supermassive make the best of this IP.
