While popular for her stint in The Big Bang Theory as Amy Farrah Fowler, acting isn’t the lone field that Mayim Bialik bears expertise in. Despite headlining Blossom in the ’90s, the actress opted to leave acting for 12 years to focus on studies and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree and later a doctorate in neuroscience.

This aspect of the actress further contributed to her character in The Big Bang Theory, which also allowed her costar Jim Parsons to take a breather from spouting scientific monologues on a regular. However, in recent years, netizens’ perception of the actress has shifted a little following her string of controversial opinions, and she once came under heavy fire for delving into the field of nootropics.

When it comes to the field of nootropics, which deals with alleged brain-enhancing drugs, there’s not a straightforward answer, as it’s still under heavy research. However, back in 2021, Mayim Bialik used her expertise in the field to promote the actress’ partnership with Neuriva Plus, claiming that she tested the product herself and started promoting it in commercials and advertorials.

Her statement read:

I’m looking forward to educating others about the science behind Neuriva because supplements are truly not all created equally. My hope is to inspire others to do more for their brain through a holistic approach and incorporate Neuriva into their daily health routine, just like it’s become part of mine.

However, the promotion didn’t sit well with many, as a year earlier, Psychology Today criticized the alleged brain-enhancing supplement, stating it’s “an expensive cup of java in pill form“. Moreover, after settling a class action lawsuit outside court, Reckitt Benckiser, the product manufacturer had to retract his previous claims of Neuriva being a clinically proven product.

Although Bialik’s attempt to bring traction to the product made her a laughingstock among the scientific community, her scientific background did help in reducing JIm Parsons‘ stress in TBBT. In the sitcom’s initial seasons, Parsons had to carry the show’s entire weight, when it came to delivering scientific monologues, which eventually started to take a toll on his health.

Fortunately, things ameliorated upon Bialik’s addition, as the pressure of rapid scientific monologues no longer rested completely on Parsons’ shoulders. As for Bialik, her return to acting was motivated by the actress’ desire to spend more time with her children and secure health insurance, and to say she was successful would be an understatement.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Max.
