Back in 2020, Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi was hired to co-write the next Star Wars movie along with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Waititi is already associated with the space opera as he directed episodes of the successful series, The Mandalorian. The Marvel director’s writing, which was usually praised as having a lot of heart to it, took a hit with his last directorial venture, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Fans are still interested to see what the Oscar-winning screenwriter brings to the Star Wars franchise. However, with no major update coming from the franchise, the Jojo Rabbit director seems to be taking his time with the script.

Is Taika Waititi Taking His Time With The Star Wars Script Or Is He Just A Lazy Writer?

When often questioned about the status of the Star Wars script, Taika Waititi‘s response over the years was that it’s still a work in progress. Many fans and movie lovers assumed that Waititi was writing a solid script for the tenth Star Wars film. In an interview with ScreenRant, the Boy director even disclosed that he couldn’t just write anything set in space and put a Star Wars title on it. He added that he has to consider certain elements and treatments particular to Star Wars, that could extend the writing process.

Later in an interview with The Project, the Thor: Ragnarok director revealed that he was getting sadder about the development of the script. When the host brought in the topic, Waititi humorously remarked that writing also meant looking at a blank page for hours without writing anything. It seemed like the Free Guy actor was stuck in a severe case of writer’s block. Waititi shared:

“But what’s writing, you know, what does writing actually mean? You know it’s like sometimes… writing is opening up your laptop, looking at a blank page on a final draft for about eight hours, and then feeling sad, and then closing it. It’s still classified as writing.”

Considering the extensive build-up of the Star Wars franchise and the negative impact of rushing the sequel trilogy films, Waititi’s decision to take his time with the script is understandable. Fans too expect a memorable film, rather than something like the critically panned The Rise of Skywalker.

Taika Waititi’s response regarding the script hasn’t changed much over the years. In his latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Lightyear voice actor confirmed that the movie is still in progress. However, Waititi also admitted to his struggles in finishing the script. The Green Lantern actor shared, “I’ve got a really good idea for it …It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part.”

Lucasfilm is also not pressuring Waititi to rush the project, it seems, as they have learned their lesson from the sequel trilogy. Waititi, too, seems determined to avoid repeating his last Thor mistake, with a well-written movie. Interestingly, both The Suicide Squad actor and Chris Hemsworth have expressed interest in another Thor movie.
