With tons of mods in so many games now, it is seen as extremely risky and whilst it can also be hugely beneficial, Take-Two and Rockstar games however seem to be targeting individuals for modding the popular Grand Theft Auto 5 with no real reasoning other than they can.

It is not uncommon now to see a company spot something that has been created as an expansion of their work through mods. Most gaming companies get in contact with these individuals out there to bring them onto the team to help create more in the pursuit of expanding their titles and to share their content with everybody else. The reasoning for a company to take down the mod in its entirety without cause has clearly struck a nerve.

With Mods seen as an inevitable outcome of most games now gamers must tread lightly with the material

One of the many mods allowed on GTA 5, The X-Wing Starfighter

The mod in question was called Sentient Streets, in this mod players would be in a world filled with 30 NPC’s that you were allowed to have real-time conversations with, and in true GTA fashion these characters are as eccentric as ever. You would be playing as an officer of the law part of the Los Santos Police Department, with the mod allowing you to make the choices of good or bad whilst juggling working alongside a partner who would directly have opinions of your choices as a part of the LSPD.

This mod sounds fantastic and it works within the world of GTA but from the point of you actually being able to play as a good guy for once, however, if you wish to pursue a life of crime that option still is very much on the cards.

With GTA 6 still floating in the air waiting for that long-winded announcement alongside Its release date, we cannot fault fans of the series for seeing a world that they believe they can expand upon. However, we cannot also fault companies for having a gripe with a finished title they have put out thinking they have pushed every boundary and been inclusive of everything to cover all ground in their finished product.

Mods have been popular with the fans of the GTA community for years now

The creator of the Sentient Streets mod is named Bloc and he hasn’t been pleased at how Rockstar and Take-Two have decided to deal with the mod in question. He has commented that he is a fan of GTA and has been for years now, he also went on to explain that the mod had been removed alongside videos explaining what the mod is about and how to go about it.

Bloc also explained that he would be willing to hear Take-Two and Rockstar’s games reasoning regarding the sudden movement to pull the mod and everything surrounding it, however, they have chosen not to comment as to their reasoning. Bloc is an independent modder and does this in his spare time so it wasn’t for financial gain and didn’t use any of the original source code or voice material from GTA 5

Bloc brought up a very interesting quote from Rockstar Games themselves in which they said “Rockstar Games has always believed in reasonable fan creativity and wants creators to showcase their passion for our games.” Now anybody reading this can see how hugely hypocritical this can come across with a single mod being pulled in its entirety with no explanation.

mods have been popular since GTA: San Andreas with the infamous Hot Coffee mod

Since GTA launched on PCs across the globe mods have been in effect, alongside YouTube explaining how to access them and with dedicated servers for these mods the inevitable will be happening behind the scenes with the content being monitored for both the companies’ sake and also creative control to an extent.

With the recent Red Dead Redemption re-release backlash in regards to its price tag on a mere HD tune-up and GTA 6 still not announced or coming anytime soon, Rockstar Games and Take-Two are not in the good books in the gaming community, for them to be pulling down fan mods is just adding fuel to the fire.

Most companies welcome the inclusion of fan-based projects within reason. However, you cannot help but think maybe sometimes a fan may come up with the missing part of their game they didn’t include and could potentially build some unwarranted jealousy with their own creation. Who knows? However, this isn’t the first time that Rockstar Games have banned modders from the game, but they also brought these modders on officially to work alongside them, maybe we could see the same for Bloc soon with all the suspicion around this immediate withdrawal of his mod.

What are your thoughts regarding Rockstar and Take-Two’s actions for GTA 5? Warranted or possible jealousy? As always let us know in the comments!
