Taylor Swift has been dominating the charts since her debut in 2006, and with the success of her Taylor’s Version hits, she is now hugging the Billboard 200 with the re-release of her 1989 record. In fact, the album has returned to the number one spot, thanks to her fans who continuously support her music.
The album is spending its fourth non-consecutive week at the top, and its return to the peak hierarchy during the week before Christmas is no surprise after the all-out sales of 1989’s vinyl editions. Indeed, a perfect gift for all Swifties out there.
Taylor Swift Ties With Music Icon Elvis Presley At The Billboard Charts
The influence of Taylor Swift’s albums has long been witnessed in the music industry, and interestingly, this marks the 67th week that the Tennessee-bred artist has had an album in the top spot on the Billboard 200. Fans would remember the same scenario that happened with music legend Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most weeks spent on top of the chart.
Swift must keep her momentum and hold that album in its current spot for the next few weeks, which is definitely a possibility, so she could finally surpass Elvis Presley and gain that recognition all for herself. At this point, the King of Rock and Roll still holds the title.
If we talk about artists in general, and take out the ‘solo’ in the label, then the record goes to The Beatles. The iconic band placed their album at the top spot for 132 weeks, roughly twice the number of weeks for Swift and Presley.
The country-pop singer will still have a few more years to beat that record, and she will definitely release more albums in the future, so it is safe to say that she has the potential to surpass The Beatles’ accomplishments as well.
At the moment, Swift has three albums dominating the top ten, namely 1989, Midnights, and Lover. Her latest album sold roughly 85,000 copies during this chart’s week, while Midnights sold 38,000 and Lover sold 27,000.
Billboard 200 albums chart usually counts 1,250 streams using a paid subscription service that counts to one album unit and 3,750 plays via streaming services that use advertisements equal to one album unit.
Why Are Fans So Obsessed With Taylor Swift’s Music?
In an interview with CNBC, Berklee College of Music professor George Howard talked about Taylor Swift’s massive success and influence as an artist and why she is so well-loved by her fans:
“The results speak for themselves. She’s as popular as she’s ever been. She creates this kind of frenzy among a significant amount of fans. She’s a very, very smart marketer in terms of keeping her distance from her fans but still making them feel connected to her by putting these clues out there… and it feels like a dialogue.”
He also noted how Swift should maintain her presence in the public eye via concert tours because that is one of the most effective ways of connecting with her fans, as the continued support will keep her albums and hits at the top of the charts.
