For being one of Blake Lively’s best friends, Taylor Swift is not exactly doing a very good job of showing it at the moment. For one, the Grammy-winner has neither advocated for Lively’s achievement of the month, i.e. It Ends With Us, nor did she show any well-deserved love and support for the other via social media.

Being one of the best friends and supporters of Lively, the pop star continues to boggle the perception of her fans by keeping mum on the subject of the actress’ recent controversy.

On one hand, Swift is a global musician with a reputation to uphold. On the other hand, there has never been any social or political theme that has scared the singer into clamming up in front of the public. Swift has always known to be vocal and fight for what she believes in, which is what makes her recent silence all the more concerning for Lively’s sake.

Has Taylor Swift Abandoned Blake Lively on Her Time of Need?

After cruising through hours of Taylor Swift fan shrines and online fan forums, two things become immediately clear to any third-party audience or viewer — a) the pop star can single-handedly boost an entire country’s economy and b) there is nothing that can tamper down her fiercely outspoken voice, be it through the lyrics of her songs or via platforms even beyond her music.

Swift’s friendship with Blake Lively, the star of Gossip Girl and the latest subject of media ridicule, is a testament to that second aspect of the pop star’s personality. Despite being a fighter for just causes, Blake Lively’s exposure to constant humiliation and mockery by critics and fans alike has failed to arouse Swift’s sympathies, contrary to the way one’s best friend would react.

The primary controversy originated after Blake Lively turned the press tour of her latest movie on domestic violence into a cute Barbie fashion moment, while also launching and promoting her hair care line. Soon after, fans attacked the actress’s overtly cheery attitude and extremely blasé reaction toward the seriousness of this film’s core subject, while also criticizing her refusal to promote awareness surrounding the heavy themes by instead shutting down the idea of her character being defined by violence. Interviews and clips from the past began to resurface that reopened old wounds and vilified her for being tone deaf, self-centered, and entitled with no evidence to the contrary.

Perhaps it was this controversy that caused Taylor Swift to take a beat and think twice before hurting her own brand and reputation by directly associating herself with Lively. Despite being best friends, attending the NFL together, naming her songs on Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s babies, and having the celebrity couple hang out at most of her concerts, Taylor Swift has remained suspiciously silent for someone who speaks up for their friends and beliefs so unequivocally.

Taylor Swift Hasn’t Gone Completely AWOL on Her Friends

Any concerns regarding the scandalous threat of social downfall or public vilification have long been alleviated. Both Taylor Swift and Blake Lively know the industry and its ins and outs, the mob mentality that guides its every whim and decision, and how to steer clear of subjects even remotely controversial that could otherwise get one blacklisted or canceled from pop culture forever.

It Ends With Us happens to be one of those subjects that leans a bit toward the controversial side. However, fellow actor Zoë Kravitz, the daughter of another musical legend, seems to be the safe bet in a volatile climate such as this. The Batman actress has recently made her feature directorial debut with Blink Twice, a crime thriller starring her partner Channing Tatum in the lead.

As a show of support, Taylor Swift has taken to Instagram to promote the film while also taking extra precautions to add trigger warnings all over her post for the viewers. This could be in response to the latest controversy that Blake Lively has been subjected to for not approaching her film’s triggering subject with proper precaution and care.

As such, while the storm clouds still hover over Blake Lively’s head, Taylor Swift conveniently manages to skirt the issue despite being her real-life BFF and godmother to Lively’s children. Instead, Swift’s fanbase gets treated to a free promotion of the Channing Tatum-starring nail-biter that is currently soaring at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It Ends With Us and Blink Twice are both playing in theatres worldwide.
