Spanning over the course of a decade, the iconic Harry Potter film series ended in 2011 after its eighth and final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. But the Wizarding World hasn’t ceased its exploration; they delved into the current, albeit more divisive, Fantastic Beasts series.

However, considering the everlasting popularity and success of the Harry Potter movies, Daniel Radcliffe sat for an interview with Empire in 2022, to reflect on the franchise. During his discussion with the outlet, the actor recalled the impact of one particular director on the entire billion-dollar film series.

It’s none other than Alfonso Cuarón, who took over the directorial responsibilities from Chris Columbus, after two films. According to Daniel Radcliffe, Cuarón’s involvement with the project simply changed the franchise’s future, by delving into a more dark and mature tone, set by the third film.

[The Harry Potter producers] got Alfonso Cuarón to come in and direct the third one. Now, by the standards of modern cinema, that decision just looks very smart and good. At the time, I think we can forget how absolutely left-field that choice seemed, as the guy who’d just done Y Tu Mamá También. But again, it’s one of the decisions that our producer David Heyman made that really shaped the next few years of the series and allowed us to go to a darker place.

Thereafter, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took a straight departure from the first two entries in the series, replacing their holiday-themed fantastical impression with a darker and eerie tone. Marking the introduction of the Marauders, as well as the creepy Dementors, the third film under Alfonso Cuarón changed the trajectory of the franchise.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Vision Offered a Darker Tone to the Harry Potter Franchise

Alfonso Cuarón’s appointment as director for the third installment in the franchise was indeed a surprising choice. Given that he was primarily known for his work on the Mexican film, which was a stark departure from the family-friendly fantasy genre of the Harry Potter series, hiring Cuarón was an unconventional decision.

According to Daniel Radcliffe, producer David Heyman took a massive gamble by entrusting the series’ next chapter to a director known for a very different kind of film. But, eventually, it became a savvy decision in retrospect, as Cuarón’s direction marked a significant shift in the series, steering towards a darker exploration that set the stage for the increasingly complex narratives of the sequels.

The filmmaker’s distinctive style and approach to the franchise served such wonders that even the Fantastic Beasts films attempted to continue the darker tone established by Alfonso Cuarón. So it seems, the director was able to translate the new atmosphere from the books to the screen with great finesse and leave an indelible mark on the franchise.
