The 2017 movie Call Me by Your Name is the story of two people, Elio and Oliver, who fall in love in the course of summer. This Oscar-winning period piece starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer has deeply resonated with many viewers, which makes it a standout in LGBTQ+ cinema.

The way James Ivory’s screenplay and Luca Guadagnino’s direction allowed the audience to connect deeply with the characters is just out of this world.

Not only for viewers but for one of its own movie stars, Armie Hammer, the film proved to be a lifelong lesson that had a great impact on him. Though it wasn’t his iconic one, instead, it was an emotion-filled monologue delivered by Michael Stuhlbarg (who plays Elio’s father) toward the end of the movie.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable, Armie Hammer was questioned about whether he had ever taken on a role or delivered a line that stuck with him for years. Over this, the actor explained that a film moment had a lasting impact on his life (although he didn’t deliver it). He went on to say:

“Michael Stuhlbarg has a speech in Call Me by Your Name, and it’s one of the most beautiful monologues I have ever seen in my life, and it truly changed the way that I’m going to parent my children, the way I look at people, everything.”

It makes sense why Stuhlbarg’s monologue, which centers on themes of unconditional love, complete acceptance, and understanding, resonated with Hammer who is a father of two (an 8-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son).

Stuhlbarg’s character and strong monologue have received praise (for portraying a father figure who departs from the stereotypical unemotional authoritarians we often see in films). This is why Hammer wanted to emulate Stuhlbarg’s character with his own parenting style.

Besides the film’s beautiful romance between Elio and Oliver, there’s another story that is equally beautiful, which is the relationship between Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) and his parents. Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays Elio’s father in the movie, told Vox:

“One of the sentiments that I love most strongly is the idea that as humans, we go through all sorts of things, and how lovely for a parent to say, ‘I see what you’re going through, and as hard as it may be, don’t crush it or try to ignore it.””

He added that there were so many things that resonated with him — “particularly to have those sentiments conveyed from a parent to a child.”

No doubt, Stuhlbarg’s performance anchors the whole movie. Even though his role didn’t snag any awards, his role is significant and also well-received by many.
