After playing the role for seventeen years, Hugh Jackman announced his retirement from playing the role of Wolverine in the X-Men films, citing Logan as his final appearance. The film was a terrific send-off to the character, who had been one of the most beloved superheroes for fans.

However, seven years later, Jackman would return to the role, albeit as a variant of Logan in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds also brought in multiple other actors from Fox’s slate of movies, which adapted popular Marvel characters. Among them was Wesley Snipes’ Blade.

Snipes received a resounding welcome for his return, with Reynolds himself appreciating the actor for changing the landscape of superhero films with his Blade trilogy (in which Reynolds starred as well). The Deadpool star also encouraged fans to demand a send-off film a la Logan for Snipes. However, fans seem to think that is hypocritical of the actor.

Though the Wolverine shown in Deadpool & Wolverine is different from the one in Logan, the heart-wrenching finale of the 2017 film and it being Jackman’s send-off has lesser meaning.

While some fans criticized Ryan Reynolds for desecrating the legacy of Logan with the team-up film, it has to be stated that it was not Reynolds who initiated the return. In an interview with Variety, the actor mentioned that he and director Shawn Levy had gone through multiple pitches with Marvel and were getting rejected.

However, things fell into place when Hugh Jackman called them out of the blue and expressed his interest in returning to the role. Jackman said,

I didn’t miss it for a long time. And then, literally, it came to me one day as I was driving down to the beach. I knew I wanted to do this. I literally stopped the car, got out, and called Ryan. He said, ‘Are you serious?’ I said, ‘I’m serious.’ And I hung up the phone.

Jackman mentioned that though he did not have any reservations about playing the role, he was happy with the way Logan turned out and mentioned that there should be a good reason for him to return to the role.
