A prequel to the superhit Game of Thrones series, the second season of House of the Dragon has come to an end, and the buzz around it couldn’t be louder. If anything, quite a lot of fans are complaining about this being yet another setup season that simply failed to deliver on the epic battles that they had been waiting for all along.
However, not all hope is lost. While this season may have been a not-so-amusing run so far because of its lack of enough action, there is still the probability of this season leading to a GoT reboot later, following the turn of events shown in the season finale. And backing up this hope further is none other than showrunner Ryan Condal himself.
House of the Dragon S2 Could Possibly Set Up a GoT Reboot Later On
Two days ago as of this writing, the season finale for House of the Dragon season 2 premiered, and it disappointingly wasn’t what fans were expecting. While what was expected was somewhere along the lines of some epic clashes ensuing, maybe even leaving the fans on a cliffhanger interesting enough to wait for the next season, what fans got was a very meekly devised plot.
Summarizing fans’ reviews on the finale, The Queen Who Ever Was, and judging from the 6.3 stars it has out of 10 on IMDb (the second worst-rated episode of the season after episode 6), this season mostly failed to deliver, especially with the finale. But, even then, there’s still hope for better things incoming. Like this season rebooting Game of Thrones later on.
As was seen in the last episode, Matt Smith‘s Daemon Targaryen sees a vision of Daenerys Targaryen. This brought up the question: Why was only Daenerys shown and why not someone else, like Jon Snow? And since she was the one seen, could it be that Daenerys is indeed the fabled “Prince That Was Promised”? Well, the showrunner has the answers to all of this.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Condal spilled the same, saying:
[The reason there was no Jon Snow was] the connectivity for us is specifically in and around the dragons … The connectedness between this family and the family to come … We know who Daenerys is watching that image, but Daemon has no idea — that could be his future daughter with Rhaenyra … So for that reason, I think it was important that it was Daenerys in the image.
Besides, Ryan Condal also added how, since “there needs to be an interconnectivity” between the prequel and sequel series, both of which have been separated by a period of many, many years, “we were always looking for this interconnectivity between the two.” However, at the same time, the final interpretation of that will be delivered by the author. He said:
We are not trying to make any kind of specific interpretation of a prophecy that has yet to be revealed by its author. That is George’s space to tell that story.
That said, it sounds like there is still hope that George R. R. Martin, through the upcoming excerpts and storylines from the book, allows space for such a plot that could reboot the GoT saga in such a way that the upcoming seasons could be more than just a straightforward continuation of this prequel series, with a much more nuanced exploration of it all.
Of course, all of this further hints at some incredible drama awaiting fans in the future seasons of this smash-hit prequel series. However, fans seem to have mixed opinions on this statement by Condal.
Fans React to Ryan Condal’s Comment on HotD S2 Finale
If Condal was hoping to calm down fans’ disappointment, disapproval, and confusion surrounding the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, he’s in for a big surprise because fans are having mixed opinions on his reaction. As a whole, a majority of them are fixated on believing that Jon Snow is The Prince That Was Promised and not Daenerys, as was hinted through the vision.

While all of this is enough to set the picture straight of the showrunner’s perspective on the upcoming events and of what fans truly want and are expecting, the final decision still rests in Martin’s hands. If he wishes, he could twist this story further, or if he wishes, he could give fans what they have been wanting to see all along.
But for now, fans will just have to make do with the explosion-less season finale that HotD season 2 delivered with utmost diligence. Who knows? Perhaps there’s a better future coming for all of us — much better than the mess that was the GoT series finale.
