When Scarlett Johansson appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, the host did not hesitate to raise the matter of the conspiracy video before her. Jimmy Fallon and the entire audience burst into laughter as Scarlett Johansson admitted that the creepy woman was her mother, Melanie Sloan. She hilariously stated:

“Oh my God, that is my mom. That is my mom. That woman with the dark hair is my mother. That’s my mom! I’ve been looking for her for like the last 15 years.”

It cannot be denied that the video was oddly creepy and even reminded us about the Paranormal Activity film series. However, little did anybody expect that the original story behind it would be so shockingly hilarious.

Even though Scarlett Johansson ended her professional relationship with Melanie Sloan in 2009, she shares a close relationship with her. Sloan was the Black Widow star’s manager till 2009 before Johansson fired her for a professional agent, Rick Yorn. ABC News reported that the Jojo Rabbit actress fired her mother as she wanted to be independent after her first marriage to Ryan Reynolds- “Once I got married, I felt that I needed to cut the cord”.

Scarlett Johansson cleared in her statements that she had no bad blood with her mother. The firing was due to her professional needs. It also reported that her mother experienced financial troubles after her firing.

However, the Oscar-nominated actress has acknowledged her mother as one of the most significant contributors to her career. During her acceptance speech at the American Cinematheque Award (via People) in 2021, Johansson revealed that her mother, Melanie Sloan used to take her and her siblings to the movies from an early age.

“When I was as young as three, my mom started showing me a catalogue of every movie she loved as a child. And she showed me all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, Rosalind Russell films, Judy Garland movies and she would swoon every time Montgomery Clift was on screen – ‘Isn’t he so gorgeous?'”

Scarlett Johansson continued that her mother had shown them some of the critically acclaimed films like Silence of the Lambs and Schindler’s List though, they were too young for those. Whenever anybody would question why she used to show age-inappropriate films to her children, Melanie Sloan replied that “all her children were very mature”. It looks like the exposure to good films since her childhood played a crucial role in her career as an actress.
