Sex Education is returning for its fourth season on September 21, 2023. Asa Butterfield, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey are all returning as Otis, Eric, and Maeve respectively. Mackey recently reflected upon her return to the series and pointed out that it will be her last hurrah as the character. She explained her reasoning behind wanting to move on from her character (via Metro),

“It’s just always tricky, it’s different when you’re playing a character that is sort of stuck in time. You know, we’re playing 17-year-olds, and we’re all almost 30, it is a bit weird. It’s something that I want to gracefully exit from, and be happy that it exists and protect it and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in but yeah, it needs to be left alone now I think”

When asked about her appearance in a potential season 5, she told RadioTimes,

“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

It seems it is business as usual and excitement on the sets of Sex Education season 4. Mackey’s comments line up with what the creator of the show Laurie Nunn has said about the future of the series. It is certainly bittersweet news for fans of the show.

Series creator Laurie Nunn recently revealed that the upcoming fourth season of Sex Education will be the final season and the last hurrah for all the beloved characters of the show. She also expressed her excitement regarding the final season and the story arcs of all the characters including Otis, Eric, and Maeve. She shared these aspects in the recent Netflix Tudum event saying,

“It’s the end as we know it. During that process, it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it. I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time”

It is sad news for fans of the show who have come a long way with the series and its characters. But all good things must come to an end and it is better to end at a good place rather than stretch something to its breaking point. Fans can experience the final season of the beloved series on Netflix from September 21, 2023.
