Avengers: Doomsday was recently announced as a part of Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate with Robert Downey Jr. set to make his comeback to the MCU. However, Downey will be playing the role of Victor Von Doom / Doctor Doom in the upcoming film, which shocked fans and the news broke the internet because of its implications on the wider MCU.
On social media, fans have expressed what they would want to see in the forthcoming film with some demanding that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker / Spider-Man be at the center of the conflict with Doom. However, making Spider-Man the main character of Avengers: Doomsday does not make much logical sense, and here is why the MCU shouldn’t take that route.
Marvel Fans Demand Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as the Main Character in Avengers: Doomsday
Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom / Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The film is set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will serve as a part of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, which has been unfolding over the past few years.
On X (formerly Twitter), user @MyTimeToShineH expressed a desire for Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker / Spider-Man to be the main character of the upcoming film, highlighting the character’s relationship with Downey’s Tony Stark / Iron Man, which was developed during the Infinity Saga.
Furthermore, the user argued that Holland’s Spider-Man franchise was also one of the most commercially successful trilogies in the MCU, proving the character’s connection with the audience. Spider-Man: No Way Home, which explored the concept of Multiverse, grossed almost $2 billion at the box office.
The Multiverse saga has sorely lacked a perspective character and Spider-Man could fill that void, especially because of his popularity. Therefore, the user felt that the character was best suited to lead the Avengers when they face off against the threat of Doctor Doom in the forthcoming film.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Leading Avengers: Doomsday Makes No Logical Sense
Despite the popularity of Holland’s Spider-Man, the move to make him the central character of Avengers: Doomsday will not make much sense, especially for in-universe reasons. Fans of the franchise also felt the same and explained why it wouldn’t be logical for Spider-Man to be the main character.

In the tweets, fans perfectly pointed out the drawbacks of making Spider-Man the focal point of the upcoming film. Users noted how Downey was playing an entirely new character in the movie, making his past with Holland’s character entirely irrelevant.
Furthermore, most of the MCU forgot that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, making his co-relationship with characters like Doctor Strange non-existent at this point. Therefore, Spider-Man is no longer suited to lead the Avengers, as the team has no recollection of working with him in the past.
Lastly, the main character of Avengers: Doomsday has to be Doctor Doom for the MCU to convincingly pull off that film similar to how Thanos was treated in Avengers: Infinity War. For those reasons, it makes zero sense to make Spider-Man the film’s main character.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
