Seven years after winning her first Oscar for La La Land, Emma Stone pulled a surprise win at the 96th Academy Awards for the 2023 film Poor Things. Starring alongside Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, the film follows Bella, a child-like young woman’s journey towards self-discovery after she is brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist.
However, amid the festivities and an electrifying performance by her fellow actor Ryan Gosling, the actress dealt with a wardrobe malfunction, leading her to accept her second Academy Award in a broken dress.
Emma Stone’s Wardrobe Malfunction While Accepting the Oscar For Best Actress
Hollywood actress Emma Stone won her second Oscar for Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards. And the 35-year-old actress got overwhelmed with emotions as she took the stage to accept the award and thanked filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.
However, as she moved towards the stage, the actress appeared to be mouthing the words, “My dress is broken.” And she later confirmed that her dress was actually damaged before moving ahead with her speech, stating, “I think it happened during I’m Just Ken. I’m pretty sure.”
Her fellow nominees under the category included Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro. Along with the cast and crew of Poor Things, she also addressed her fellow nominees, saying, “I share this with you.”
Having secured her second Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Poor Things, Stone has now joined the ranks of acclaimed actresses such as Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster, who have each won the prestigious award twice.
Emma Stone Was Amazed By Ryan Gosling’s Performance
Following a wardrobe mishap during the award ceremony, which she believes occurred during Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken, Emma Stone expressed her genuine admiration for his performance. During her backstage Oscars interview, the actress shared, “They sewed me back in!” before adding, “I genuinely do think I busted it during I’m Just Ken.”
She further stated, “I was so amazed by Ryan [Gosling] and what he was doing, and that number just blew my mind.” Gosling, who was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Barbie, delivered a live performance in a sparkling pink suit alongside his Barbie co-stars Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
He also took his performance to the Barbie director Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in the audience, who joined in singing along. And Gosling tapped his La La Land co-star to sing along as well. Reflecting on the moment, Stone recalled, “I was right there and I was going for it, and you know, things happen.”
Along with Best Actress, Stone’s Poor Things also won the Oscars for Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design.
