The Spanish actress Penélope Cruz is well-known for her memorable performances in both films and TV shows. She has starred in movies like Sahara, Loving Pablo, Wasp Network, Vanilla Sky, Bandidas and more.
Winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), she has various other accolades under her name. She has received a BAFTA Award, three Goya Awards, and nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and four Golden Globe Awards.
Cruz is an actress with multiple talents, but there is one talent of hers, which includes cutting other people’s hair.
Pirates of the Caribbean Actress Penélope Cruz Cut Salma Hayek’s Hair in the Dark
In an interview with the Guardian, Penélope Cruz talked about being a naughty child, crazy hair, and why aging isn’t all bad. She said that in her childhood, she used to spend hours washing and cutting hair at the salon (where her mom used to work). The Sahara star also experimented with this talent on her best friend Salma Hayek in the dark. As she said:
“When I was nine years old I used to spend a couple of hours a day washing and cutting hair at my parents’ salon and still, today, I’ll do everyone who lets me – like Salma Hayek, who is one of my best friends. I’ve done her hair when the power went out in her house, with just a candle. That one really trusts me.”
The 49-year-old actress is more impressed with how Hayek trusted her with her skills.
The two famous actresses have been best friends since the early days of their careers and have remained close ever since. Cruz and Hayek strengthened their friendship onscreen in the 2006 comedy western Bandidas, where they portrayed beautiful bank robbers in Mexico during the early 1900s. Even if the movie itself hasn’t met the expectations, their friendship certainly has.
Pirates of the Caribbean Actress Used to Spend Hours in the Salon to Practice Haircutting
Cruz spent her childhood in the hair salon where her mother worked and it seems like she picked up hairstyling skills along the way. She’s so skilled with a brush and hairspray that she can even create a perfect hairstyle in complete darkness (like what she did in the case of Hayek).
The actress told (via People) she “was learning about all the treatments they did” in the salon where her mother worked:
“It was my first acting school because all of these women were playing characters. They enter one way, and leave a completely different person. After telling my mother all their secrets about their private lives and their husband or their lover, they were completely transformed after the treatment.”
Besides this, she remembers that the salon was also a psychologist’s office where she used to hide and study.
