“I started reading all these men’s magazines, trying to follow all the tips: what you’re supposed to wear, what you’re supposed to have, things you’re supposed to say, and all the exercises you’re supposed to do. I thought this character is someone who follows all these tips to the letter of the law, and yet he wasn’t happy.”

One thing about the film that didn’t sit well with Gosling was when his character was asked to hit on women. It was kind of challenging for his character to pick up girls and confront the “bar-like situations”.

“It was embarrassing. Because they would just sort of, you know, set up the shot and then say go hit on her. And then, it would be totally quiet, and I’d have to go in and start kicking it to some poor girl in the worst possible way.”

Gosling wasn’t really fond of going upfront and saying pickup lines to a girl, that’s the most challenging thing he faced in that part of the movie.
