As a developer and publisher, Bethesda developed a significant reputation in AAA Gaming and the RPG genre, to be specific. The company’s games, in-house or produced through other development teams, have left their mark in the gaming industry.

Not all of Bethesda’s games were instant successes. Some of them needed time to iron out problems, but in the end, they were incredibly well-received and enjoyed by millions of gamers. However, one of the most popular steamers, Asmongold, has called out Bethesda’s Skyrim and directly compared it to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s legendary title, Darksouls.

Asmongold Believes Skyrim is a Joke and Doesn’t Compare to Darksouls

There’s absolutely no arguing that Skyrim has been the biggest title for Bethesda. Even after a decade since its release, fans are actively playing, discussing, and crafting mods. It’s hard to find a living soul who doesn’t appreciate the game, but clearly, Asmongold is the real anomaly.

In a recent episode of the Steak and Eggs Podcast, Asmongold shared his opinion about Bethesda’s role in the industry. According to the streamer, Bethesda has always been a “bad” studio that’s been pumping out trash games.

After calling out Bethesda’s games, Asmongold went on to directly compare the studio’s most popular title, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with FromSoftware’s Darksouls. Even though Darksouls was released a year later than Skyrim, he believes that it’s far superior. That’s not all; he bashes Skyrim’s combat system and calls it a joke.

Even if I go look at Skyrim, here’s the reality. Skyrim came out in 2011, and Dark Souls 1 came out in 2012. Like in one year, Dark Souls One is so far above. If you go back, and look the combat in Skyrim, that sh*t is a joke.

While it’s true that Skyrim‘s combat system is fairly dated by today’s standards and lacked quite a bit compared to Darksouls, it was still comprehensive for the time. Bethesda’s game had tons of different enemies that required unique ways of fighting, especially when it came to overpowering dragons. You had melee weapons, both one-handed and two-handed, magic, bow, and let’s not forget about special abilities and dragon shouts, which could be used for quickly changing the tide of the battle.

Even the game’s combat system was bad, according to Asmongold; we can’t forget about the mod heaven in Skyrim. Over the past decade, we’ve seen multiple mods for the game that have improved many aspects of the combat system. It’s the kind of community support that we can never see in a Miyazaki game!

Should You Play Skyrim or Dark Souls?

Bethesda and FromSoftware have managed to craft their very own magnum opus in realms rich with lore and opportunities to be the best in the land. Skyrim and Dark Souls have both been undeniable classics and have often been compared, but it’s not that simple. Although they do share similarities, they bring completely different experiences.

Skyrim is one of the biggest RPG releases of the past decade. The game is based on an open-world formula and is supplemented by incredibly fun side quests. Although the Combat system is bad, according to Asmongold, it’s still fairly simple. Bethesda’s title is more relaxed, as it won’t push you to your limits and leave you with brain rot.

On the other hand, Darksouls is an interconnected semi-open-world game. Since it’s an action RPG, its combat is more enjoyable. However, it’s not a cakewalk. The bosses and enemies you’ll come across in the game are incredibly punishing. The game features a lore that is deep and doesn’t spoon-feed you every part of it. You’re on your own in this game.

You can’t go wrong playing any of these games. If you’re looking for a calm and fun experience, choose Skyrim. However, if you want a challenge, go with Darksouls. Both games require patience, learning, and perseverance.
