Chris Hemsworth became a household name with the role of Thor the God of Thunder in the MCU. Since 2011, the Aussie powerhouse has been wowing audiences with his charm, talent, and of course, good looks. But his good looks came into question when the actor had to become fat Thor for Avengers: Endgame.

After the failure of the Avengers in trying to save the world from Thanos, while all the OG Avengers took it hard having lost some of their closest loved ones along with half the universe’s population, it was Hemsworth’s Thor who underwent the most drastic change. From the chiseled abs, Thor had a beer belly after depression hit him hard and knocked him onto the couch, with seemingly no way to get up (or out) of it. And that almost gave the actor some serious injury.

Thor’s Fat Suit Took a Toll on Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth had a pretty good time playing Thor, a character that propelled him to the heights of fame. But after playing the character for almost a decade, when changes came about, it had a pretty drastic effect on the actor. In Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth had to wear a massive fat suit to play the depressed and beer-bellied version of the God of Thunder. After losing to Thanos, Thor becomes the epitome of a couch potato and gives us a pretty accurate description of how trauma affects us.

The movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, were filmed simultaneously. Which is why, on some schedules, Hemsworth had to film scenes as both normal Thor as well as fat Thor one after the other. This process of going in and out of the fat suit caused him pretty bad backaches. Talking about this, directors Joe and Anthony Russo told Business Insider back in 2019:

Chris Hemsworth did have to wear a bodysuit for [his] role. We had to toggle back and forth. While we were shooting ‘Endgame’ where he was heavier we had to do some pickup shots for ‘Infinity War,’ so he would have to go back and forth between those two looks. So he had to wear a bodysuit, and it was quite heavy. That suit started to wear on his back, which was scary when you have someone who has to be so physical.

Thankfully, things did not escalate much, and other than some intense backaches once in a while, the actor did not suffer more. His Aussie genes, which shine through in his adventures, were enough to stall any serious injuries.

The Future of Thor in The MCU

Since 2011 until now, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has been part of the MCU for more than a decade. His last appearance was in Thor: Love and Thunder opposite Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster/ Mighty Thor. Unfortunately, the movie did not get the same love as its predecessors, and was the reason Taika Waititi was given the boot from the multi-billion franchise. But now, rumors of Thor 5 are abound, and we could get to explore more of the Omnipotence City in thr next chapter.

Rumors say that the upcoming movie will be Thor trying to stop a war between New Asgard, led by Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, and the gods of Omnipotence City, with Zeus and Hercules returning. The movie is also rumored to have Portman’s Jane Foster and Idris Elba’s Heimdall back in scene. But fans would beg to differ.

Hopefully, the next movie serves a better purpose than its predecessor, and is an overall better movie that does not depend on cheap and quick comedy. Thor: Love and Thunder is available for streaming on Disney +.
