She explained to Elle Canada that, as Yelena Belova for her MCU debut in Black Widow, she was required to maintain a particular body type.

Why Will Florence Pugh Never Drop Pounds for a Film Role?

Marvel movie stars are said to be subjected to rigorous exercise regimens and strict diets. This is intriguing because Florence Pugh has previously discussed her not-so-good experiences in Hollywood and her struggles with body image. Despite having to maintain a specific body type for her role in Black Widow, she informed Elle Canada that she refused to have her meals prepared and watched, which set her apart from many of her co-stars.

“When I got the job, I wanted to know what the regimen was. I wanted to know whether it would be them or me calling the shots. That was a big deal for me. I didn’t want to be part of something where I was constantly checked on and people were making sure I was in the ‘right’ shape. That’s not me at all.”

She considered her own nutrition and did not want anyone to spy on her everyday meals on set. She ate Tupperware meals every day while shooting Black Widow. The actress, 28, who played the sister to Scarlett Johansson’s character in 2021’s Cate Shortland film, told Elle Canada:

“Scarlett [Johansson] had this amazing guy who cooked beautiful things for her and her team. I thought that was clever because you’re doing fitness all the time and you need to have someone who’s on top of what you’re eating and the nutrients you’re getting. I remember her asking: ‘Why are you cooking for yourself? Just let us feed you!’”

Florence Pugh on Why Women’s Body Image is a Significant Issue in Hollywood

Florence Pugh, who was born in Oxford, is currently one of the most well-known actors, making her extremely influential to a large number of people. In light of this, she has spoken out against “complying” with Hollywood’s body standards. The 28-year-old opened up about her life in the spotlight in a widely watched interview video with Vogue. She casually stated the following while cooking:

“Body image for women is a major thing. From the moment you start growing thighs and bums and boobs and all of it, everything starts changing. And your relationship with food starts changing. I had a weird chapter at the beginning of my career, but that was because I wasn’t complying. I think that was confusing to people, especially in Hollywood.”

She believed that because it is just the way things have always been, “women in Hollywood”, especially young women, are clearly “putting themselves” in a lot of different ways to obtain “whatever opportunity” they need.

In the meantime, Pugh revealed to The Sunday Times in 2021—during the promotion of Black Widow—that she had been told to lose weight at a Hollywood casting call for Studio City.

“I was a baby and I thought that was Hollywood..This is what they do. And then I felt stupid because I thought, well, of course, how could I come to LA and not have expected to have my weight discussed in a meeting?”

Well, Pugh was able to hold her ground, though, apparently, as her acting career took off. We last saw her playing Jean Tatlock in the highest-grossing biographical film, Oppenheimer (2023). She will next be seen as Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Two, which will be released on March 1, 2024.
